Scams like these

Seen some interesting FB posts (mostly from US/ UK) to date, but I'm sure it will hit us soon of fairly sophisticated CC scams.

Basically they call you (seemingly having both your CC number and phone number).. claiming to be from the fraud department and querying some recent transactions.

Agree with you that these are fraud then ask you to confirm your ID.

This is typically an SMS that says ..do not read this out to anyone.. but you think you are talking to your bank.

Instead they are live inputting a large transaction into some merchant and you are authorising the charge by telling them the authorisation numbers.

So be aware, read all texts.. and by very suspicious of supposed calls from your financial institution.
Especially texts that say “Don’t share this…”

Does anyone else get random SMSs “can we have a quick chat please”

I have had three of them over about three months, the number has no previous history in my phone and I check the number with ReverseAustralia.com and the number doesn’t come up.

I just delete them

Got into work this morning to find my personal email account was being spam bombed. Buried within the 100’s of signup notifications was a notice from Acor that my account email had been changed. Promptly logged in and changed my password, reset my email address and phone number and turned on two factor identification.

3 hours later I received confirmation of a booking in Paris using my points. Called the hotel and advised them it was a fraudulent booking and they promptly canceled it and refunded the points

Lessons: the password for the account was used on other websites and had been compromised.

Stupidly I didn’t have two factor authentication turned on

Don’t be me.

Got an obvious scam message claiming to be from our exiting CEO looking for bank account details so they can deposit a sizeable bonus due to me being employed with the company for over 15 years.
Not to divulge to others, because it’s a sensitive subject.
Very much the sort of thing scams say not to do.

Very carefully (so as not to insult when it was such a generous & unneeded offer) checked for validity. Unless someone’s accessed his memories & recalls how I served our CEO overcooked BBQ’d steak & snags when he was in Oz just after my wife & I moved into our first home, it was legit … :)

Can be spoofed.

Can be spoofed.
Yes I stopped looking for patterns in the alleged sending ‘phone number years ago, it was always spoofed and the number they used was random.

I did have one instance, however, where they called a young lady who used her ‘phone for her business & they used my ‘phone number. She missed their call, so called me back, and since I was in a meeting she left a message with her name & business and that she’d missed my call and to please call back.
I can’t recall what her business was, but it was something where it’d be annoying for her NOT to get a call back just to let her know the original call had been bogus and I hadn’t been enquiring about the widgets she was selling.
She didn’t believe me, and seemed quite annoyed! Ah well, I tried. :)

Usually, under settings, (if you really dont know) (!!!, wry), usually under settings it asks you for an email address, and an Aus mobile phone number, the more modern systems now can use the sensor on the phone to sense your finger print, or your face.
Telstra will ask for first, to send a code to your main mobile phone #, even if that phone number is not with Telstra, and then as a 2nd back up, will also send a code to your email address.
Google, will send a question "is this you" to a linked device, you click yes, and it lets you in.
Usually, when you first set up a device, or app, it will ask for a mobile phone # and an email address.
Scammers who are cunning will firstly change the mobile phone #, and then change the email address, then they can get 2fa sent to their "new" numbers.
Porting is now too easy, as in phone numbers.

Ubuntu, what a name, keep getting a lot of that for an email address I look after for an old man, ...
Or something called "wijl.*n*o".
---
Also, yahoo will allow a block sender limit of 1000, not good if an old man wont listen, and not go on a website looksee, and add his email address to all and sundry.

I hope that wasn't directed at me. But in case it was, ALL doesn't have a MFA option under "settings" (sees your wry smile and replies with a tongue sticking out to get one up and then an unamused face at such unhelpful childishness!)
