Scams like these

Seen some interesting FB posts (mostly from US/ UK) to date, but I'm sure it will hit us soon of fairly sophisticated CC scams.

Basically they call you (seemingly having both your CC number and phone number).. claiming to be from the fraud department and querying some recent transactions.

Agree with you that these are fraud then ask you to confirm your ID.

This is typically an SMS that says ..do not read this out to anyone.. but you think you are talking to your bank.

Instead they are live inputting a large transaction into some merchant and you are authorising the charge by telling them the authorisation numbers.

So be aware, read all texts.. and by very suspicious of supposed calls from your financial institution.
Especially texts that say “Don’t share this…”

Does anyone else get random SMSs “can we have a quick chat please”

I have had three of them over about three months, the number has no previous history in my phone and I check the number with ReverseAustralia.com and the number doesn’t come up.

I just delete them

Got into work this morning to find my personal email account was being spam bombed. Buried within the 100’s of signup notifications was a notice from Acor that my account email had been changed. Promptly logged in and changed my password, reset my email address and phone number and turned on two factor identification.

3 hours later I received confirmation of a booking in Paris using my points. Called the hotel and advised them it was a fraudulent booking and they promptly canceled it and refunded the points

Lessons: the password for the account was used on other websites and had been compromised.

Stupidly I didn’t have two factor authentication turned on

Don’t be me.
