amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 or 3:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 4:1 to Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders can also earn bonus Amex Membership Rewards Points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

With respect to amazon subscription benefit: I already have amazon prime and looks like you cannot buy it as a gift, how do I redeem the $84 benefit??

Use that Amex card to pay for a subscription - yours or someone else….. you then get the money back.

I think it ends at the end of this month doesn’t it? So unless your Prime renewal is due, I think the credit will be lost.

Yes, the end is nigh (31st Dec)……. Luckily mine renewed last week, so at least a nice extension. Just after that went through, I switched to Origin NBN, who gave me another 12 months free, which stacks cleanly, now 2 years free.

My wife has the Explorer Card. Is there a way to ‘elicit’ an upgrade offer for the Platinum Card? That is, one that will generate some bonus points. Long shot, I know, but thought I’d ask.

I just cancelled my current prime subscription, got a oro rated refund and will buy again using the new credit card

Used AFF link to apply the card for my wife and got a personalized offer of 225k points, was pleasantly surprised.

If I were able to meet the spend requirement within a day - I have a $5k ATO bill I have to pay anyways would I get the bonus before Dec 15 so that I can transfer at the higher rate to QR??
Where do you get that link? TIA

Do I need to save the benefit to the card first, or is it automatically refunded?

You'll need to save the offer to your card first. The easiest way (imo) to do this is to open the AMEX app, click on 'Offers' and then simply click the plus next to the offer titled 'Get a credit for your Amazon Prime Subscription'. I'm pretty sure they say they'll then credit your account with the Prime Subscription cost (up to $84) within 30 days! I did this yesterday and it cost $79.99.

One small thing to watch out for; Amazon like to offer a 30 day free trial, meaning you won't be charged until January. In order for this to apply (unless AMEX extend the offer) you'd need to cancel after first signing up to Prime, and then go back through so you get charged for the annual plan before December 31.

Hello brains trust! Sorry if it's been answered before or in the T&Cs, but the wording is a bit obscure to me unfortunately.
With the Platinum charge card, if I add my wife as a secondary card holder, do we both get access to the Amex lounge? And will they be eligible for a priority pass membership as well?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about the Amex lounge policy, but you can nominate one additional Cardholder for a Priority Pass membership (I've given it to my mum, and she guests my dad in whenever they travel together). If I recall correctly, you need to call Amex to activate both your PP and your nominated additional cardholder's PP memberships. So you should be nominate your wife for the additional PP membership.

From the T&Cs:

Priority PassTM: These Terms and Conditions govern American Express Platinum Card Members’ participation in and use of the Priority Pass™ program. Priority Pass is an independent airport lounge access program. Your Priority Pass benefit is limited to airport lounge access only. Non-lounge airport experiences in the form of credits for restaurants, cafes and bars are not available. Primary Platinum Card Members and one nominated Additional Platinum Card Member per Account are eligible for Priority Pass membership.
