Y is considered to be a vowel if… The word has no other vowel: gym, my. The letter is at the end of a word or syllable: candy, deny, bicycle, acrylic. The letter is in the middle of a syllable: system, borborygmus.

But I don't think it is a vowel at all. aeiou are vowels and h and y are not

If I was taught that, then I have forgotten it, along with a lot of other things.

SWMBO went to school in Vancouver and she swears that she didn't know that either.

We got taught this when we were quite young, i.e. that "y" can be considered a vowel. Just add to the list of "lies" we teach kids that makes it easier to learn things, which we then discover the truth when we're older and more understanding.

Of course, "y" is strictly not a vowel - it may make a vowel sound but typographically speaking it is not a vowel.

We had a question in a maths test at the end of the year - topic was probability and it went something like, "What is the probability that a random letter selected from the word POLYGON is a vowel?" After a bit of an exchange between the teachers as we were starting the marking of scripts, we agreed to allow two answers... you guessed it, we permitted students to count Y as a vowel.
