Aussie passport cost increases again!

I see that once again somehow Australia seems to think that it deserves the title of the world most expensive passport? Why? It's ridiculously expensive for such a low population and not exactly the world most desirable.

I know someone that works at the rba who makes the passports, it cost them only $10 to make one.

They still owe us a 20% discount on a passport renewal for the 2 years the border was closed and travel blocked during covid.

Passports are indexed annually, so it should not be a surprise there is an increase.

It’s probably an ‘easy’ source of revenue - the government (of any persuasion) will say if you want a passport you can afford a holiday or work pays for it. Even when it’s not that simple.

Certainly a very easy source of revenue for little return ...like many things as I am learning in Australia!

If they increase the price, they could at least make sure that the passports are fit for purpose.

Then again, what choice do we have. They could charge $10,000 for a passport and either you shut up and put up or went without - like what choice do you really have.

Does the government maybe have some sort of underhanded deal to try and coerce more people to domestic tourism, i.e. go holiday in places where you don't need an Australian passport?

Ofcourse some European countries have been using ID cards for travel for years where appropriate between like minded countries. Then the debate starts .."but, but, but, I don't want an ID card"..blah blah.

Between state drivers licenses/ID, your TFN, myID, Medicare, etc anyone who thinks we don't have an in effect national ID system is crazy.

The RBA doesnt make or issue passports, they just set the official interest rate.
