Flew back from Nadi earlier this week and they did a liquids check between scanning the boarding pass and boarding the aircraft outside on the way to the aerobridge. Absolutely insane IMO, as there are no places beyond here to fill a water bottle.

It is the only way I can reconcile the current situation. There are also common sayings about conspiracy vs incompetence which would appear to the two viable options.
Forget the conspiracy.
Think about security. Think about which airports/countries it is being conducted in. Think about the level of trust you may have in the screening in those places it is being conducted. Why may the Australian Govt mandate something extra and what could they reasonably negotiate with those countries? Now think of international diplomacy and how countries rarely directly criticise and you may understand why the Aus Govt doesn’t fully explain the reason for the additional screening.
I’d also suggest the practice was ‘threat informed’ when it was enacted.

Or it could be protecting commercial interests… but only with a minor subset of incoming pax. 😐
