Why is that? I have had many stays at Holiday Inn in many countries and not had any issues with them. I find they provide reasonable value accommodation.

Indeed! I've stopped staying at Hilton et.al, as I can't justify the cash. HI fits a nice niche of comfort but still reasonable price. There are some scary HI's around the world (mainly in the U.S), but ICH are massively overhauling the HI Brand this year and unless hotels implement the changes, they will be gone.

indeed. My next HI stay is at MEL airport this week. Can't justify the extra $50 asking price for Hilton vs the extra 3 mins of walking (which is welcomed after a 9 hour flight). Last stay at HI MEL I was upgraded to a suite while my last stay at MEL Hilton gave me a basic room). I'll take the suite at HI vs basic room at Hilton and save my company $50 in the process. Even without the room upgrade, the basic rooms types offer similar features for a significant price difference which I cannot justify.

Have also spent a lot of time in the last year at Holiday Inn Express Causeway Bay in Hong Kong. While there are nicer hotels around, the overall value for money is hard to beat for my needs. The price includes breakfast and internet and its a short walk to the office from which I am working while in Hong Kong. This week I am trying Crowne Plaza and while its very nice, I am only staying here because the rate difference was low this week. Generally CP works out nearly 2 x HIX when considering internet inclusion. Given they are so close geographically, I expect to be back at HIX for my next trip. And compared with other hotels in the proximity (such as Park Lane, Excelsior, Cosmopolitan etc), and those even further away needing taxi transport each day (like Marriott, Marriott Courtyard, Conrad etc), HIX remains the best value for money in my experience. And this is with consideration of my status with Hilton, Marriott, SPG and ICH programs.

Was there last week and found it to have everything I needed. The chair at the desk was awesome, can't remember the brand but it is the chair from heaven. The lamp on the desk was also excellent.

Internet speed was amazing.

The entrance to Causeway Bay MTR (letter A entrance/exit) has to be a kilometre long I am sure by the time you go through all the tunnels.

Also, the laundry at Sharp St West (across the flyover) was very quick and cheap.

Will happily stay there again.

Agree. In my experience, the value is very hard to beat. And I have stayed at most reasonable hotels in the Causeway Bay area. I'd be very happy to stay there if paying on my own dime, and happy to stay there even when my employer is paying.

I have also stayed at HI hotels in UK, Germany and USA and each time found them to be good value and cannot complain about the accommodations for the money spent.

I have always had in the back of my mind that HI are rubbish and cheap hotels.

However, I have been having a look at a few of them in the USA and also in Europe for my next holiday.

They do indeed seem to have improved from my last stay many many years ago in a few of them.

I had them in the same category as the Formule 1 hotels....:shock:

Thanks for letting me know that they are much improved!!

Great way to save a few $$$

While they are not in the same league as Intercontinental, Conrad or Westin, it is true that there can be a significant variation between individual examples. Some are rubbish, but many do offer good value accommodation. As with anything, its a matter of doing your research and not setting your expectations above the pricing level.

Well your comments about the Hilton Melbourne Airport VS HI MEL airport got me looking further into it....

I stay at the Hilton MEL airport about 4-5 times a year....

I will give the HI a try on my next trip in April as the Feb trip is pre-paid for the Hilton.

I have lost all status with Hilton so I have no loyalty to them anymore...

It's all about SPG and the Priority programs now!

The Hilton has a great advantage of its raining. But at this time of the year you would need to be unlucky to arrive during rain.

Is possible walk through the car park and then its just a quick skip across the road to the hotel.

I'll be back there tomorrow night.

.

You'd be lucky to see it rain in Melbourne these days no matter what time of year....:p

Dunno what you mean, in the previous two calendar months Melbourne has had over 100mm of precipitation - double that in the water harvesting regions.

I don't think I have ever stayed in a bad Holiday Inn. Very consistent and good value.
