So I recently booked a return flight ASP-MEL-LHRxSIN (during DSC). I wasn't entirely sure exactly what day I'd prefer to fly out so I booked Flex economy outbound and Saver inbound. Flight date 6/1/26-27/1/26 in case it makes a difference.

Today I tried to reschedule slightly. 24hrs in Melbourne and a day earlier.
First I was told I would have to pay a $125 change fee due to 'most restrictive conditions' applying to all flights, which in my opinion is just utter BS - I've also looked through as many T&Cs as I can find including making as to book the flights again and can't see anywhere that I'd have to pay to change my fully flexible flights based on an unrelated return leg.
I was all set to suck it up at the time and make a complaint about it after.. until the quote comes through to change my flexible flights.
Over $1300 extra. For a flight that costs no more than $300 extra if I were to book it outright on the website right now - with the same fare classes as before. It doesn't even include the 24h in Melbourne which is apparently impossible - it's just 1 day sooner.
All the agent is telling me is that I can't book a lower fare class or a cheaper one - which a) doesn't apply and b) is untrue since the ticket conditions state a flight credit can be used to book fares lower than my original ticket.
Additionally I'm being told that stopovers just aren't permitted - therefore I can't spend 24h in Melbourne - even though the fare conditions say "Unlimited free stopovers permitted in each direction".

OK, rant over. But what the hell?

Looking forward to getting my LTG and exclusively flying other oneworld airlines. Also considering rage cancelling this and future bookings, but probably won't because LTG would be nice..

It's a bit hidden on QF website, but quite standard to have the more restrictive rules apply to the whole itinerary.

Important Information

For bookings made through Qantas Contact Centres and selected Qantas airport locations as well as web chat, sms and selected social media channels in some countries, a booking fee applies.
Note: If this fare is combined with another fare the most restrictive fare rules apply.
Note:If this fare is booked as part of the Companion Sale, the fare is non-refundable, two or more passengers must be booked and travel together, child/infant discounts do not apply.

The Saver fare component requires to rebook a fare which is equal or more expensive.

Changes

Permittedbefore and after departure of the first flight in your booking.
  • A change fee of $150 AUD per person applies.
  • Your flight can only be changed to a new fare of equal or higher value. Alternatively, a Flight Credit can be used to book fares lower than your original ticket price and can be used towards multiple bookings.
  • There may be a fare difference between the fare for your new booking and the original fare.

The stopover info they gave you seem to be nonsense.

So, not in the 'Changes' section which I looked at, buried at the bottom instead.

It's BS regardless, if I wanted a Saver ticket I would have bought a Saver ticket. But I wanted flexibility.. why sell me a 'flexible' ticket that is no more flexible than the cheaper one.. and yes, a cheaper one was available

We had another thread very recently with similar sentiments

Given the flight credit question, it appears unless you push the $ into a flight credit (less fees) that a change forces the price upwards …
