Redemption on Hong Kong Airlines

The SYD - HKG route ends in March, sorry. They started it back up in Oct 2025 but i guess it hasnt been successful.

am I right in reading this thread that I have to call to check availability? how tiresome.
Any ideas what the points will be? I have around 480,000 points and want to go with 2 adults and 2 kids to Hong Kong in Economy in April 2026 from Sydney or Canberra.

Yeah unfortunately you need to call (and get a good person on the other end). My flight from YVR to HKG is over 14hrs and was 100,000 points so it should be a manageable amount? Let us know how you go.

Thankyou. I had a few mins on lunch break so called. They only have availability up until March 27th so I'll need to wait a few weeks before I can book April.
4 seats one way came to 130,000 in Economy from Sydney.

How did you find the airline? I'm a bit nervous flying with airlines that are new to me. But school holiday prices with cash are just too much money and this is the only way I can do with points unless I go via Singapore and really don't want to do that - plus it uses way more points.

I havent flown yet, my flight is mid-November, I will come back and let you know how I go. I am flying J though. When I was selecting my seats the agent said that economy cant select a seat until 72hrs beforehand and even then its for a fee. You can only pick a seat for free 24hrs beforehand. That might not be ideal for your family. Buisness can select a seat for free.

Wow, ok thank you for the info. This will not work for us so I've ruled it out as an option.

I took my Hong Kong Airlines flight and I thought that I would write my experience.
I booked two J seats for my husband and I, YVR to HKG. 100,000 points and around $67 each.
I used their WhatsApp to select my seats. We were supposed to be flying their newer layout that they use for this route with this seat configuration:

I got an email about a week before the flight saying that my seats had been reallocated and that it would now be their old configuration:

I went back onto their WhatsApp and confirmed our seat selection again with staff.
On the day of the flight, we checked in and our seat allocation had changed; I was now supposed to be in a honeymoon seat config with a stranger. The staff said nothing could be done about it.
On entering the flight I spoke to their airline stewardess who proactivley spoke to my seatmate and moved them, so my husband and I could sit together:

The food wasnt very good, the IFE was pretty awful (not even a flight map and only about 8 english movies) but the staff were amazing. The seat was comfortable and we got some great sleep. Very VERY dated product. They wouldnt let us que for the bathroom which caused a range of issues (they gave you a number then came and got you when it was your turn to go to the bathroom, but it was chaos really).
My husband wont fly them again as the plane was very old and hes a super nervous flyer that percieves old cabins as unsafe.
