Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Months ago, my recollection is the SYD and MEL to/from HKG QFi flights were punctual the vast majority of the time.

That is no longer the case. Naturally, there aren't delays every day, but it seems that at least 20 to 33 per cent of the time, there's problems unrelated to weather.
Actually there hasn't been too many bad delays lately on HKG. Looks like the original plane went tech and they flew this in from BNE to cover.

I even got wifi 6hours out of the 8.5h flight over.

QF29 took off at 1830 and scheduled to arrive in HKG at 0127 on 13/09 - therefore the departure out of HKG will be in the dead middle of night at approx 3am?? The passengers would NOT be pleased! CC @Melburnian1

I mean im already slightly annoyed. That was my original flight until i (voluntarily) changed to QF127. Now i could've had it for free or pushed for CX flight.

Also pretty sure watching the flight availablities and seats shifting, i probably lost any upgrade possibility as a few J pax shifted over.

Perhaps Airservices staff shortages are due to genuine illnesses, stress or an inability of management to retain sufficient fully trained staff, but there's also the possibility some might have just 'taken a sickie', conveniently on a Friday.

Never underestimate the corrosive influence of unions in Oz. Only 13 per cent of the total workforce are members, but unions have sway in essential sectors like transport. No wonder productivity in Australia is receding.

I have thoughts on this, but will reply in the dedicated thread for the topic

QF 30 to MEL on 12/09 finally took off at 0312 the next morning on 13/09 - I hope good compensation for this extreme delay like this - wait from 2005 the night before to 0300 the next day… the new arrival time in MEL is likely to be 1400

I'll be on QF29 soon - if something like this happens then (a massive delay), would I be able to push at MEL to attempt to be put onto another QF flight ie. HKG via SIN, or even a CX flight if there's space? (if CX would even support / take some passengers from QF anyway?)

I don't mind transiting in SIN or CGK, as long as I'd be able to leave the same day.

I'll be in business if that makes any difference / has additional leverage compared to Economy, or, considering MEL is my home, it's likely they'd probably just ask me to go home and come back the next day?

I have airport parking booked for a few weeks and it would throw a spanner in the works if I had to go home / rebook and come back the next day.

The QF 29 today is facing another significant delay today - using the QPF arriving from HKG today at 1350 to MEL… now scheduled to depart at 1515 instead of 1020!!

On Sunday 14 September, QF7, the lunchtime 1210 hours SYD to DFW A380 is expected to depart at 1645 this afternoon, 275 minutes late.

In contrast, Saturday 13's is a B789 that should depart punctually.

After two consecutive days of cancellations of QF1 (11 and 12 September), the flight looks to be operating normally today.

Yeah it's a flow-on effect, unless they have a spare / substitute A330 that's already / would / will be in MEL around the time of QF29's regular departure time so that it can get back on track.

I know delays of this magnitude don't happen often (ie. 50% of the time), but it's a concern nonetheless.

I've got an almost 24hr layover in HKG before flying to my next destination but of course I'd rather get there on time and check into the hotel at a reasonable hour, not at like 2am!

Business travellers may be unable to, but as a leisure traveller, I always leave 24 hours (or preferably 48) before connections on a different airline.

Years ago one could get away with same day connections, but you have been very wise to have an 'almost 24hr' layover. Well done.

OQL is still in London after 4 days. It was scheduled to operate QF2 on 12/9 but has now been cancelled.

Does anyone know what's wrong with it? Are spare parts not quickly available?

Four days in the aviation world is a costly and quite lengthy period for what was a serviceable plane to be inoperable.

I hope seats are able to be found on QFi ex CDG/FCO or other carriers ex LHR or elsewhere to get passengers to (or back to) Oz.

A delay we missed yesterday was with B789 VH-ZNI.

On Friday 12 September it operated QF4 from AKL to SYD (and earlier, ex JFK) with gate arrival at 0817 hours, three minutes early. Empty flight QF6005 was next, taking off from SYD at 1115 (nominal schedule was 0950 hours) with gate arrival in the southern capital at 1231 hours. It has then run QF93, the 0945 hours MEL-LAX in the sky at 1436, arriving at 1114 hours, 254 minutes late.

This suggests a B789 had failed in Melbourne although I went through all and couldn't find evidence.

On Saturday 13 September, B789 VH-ZNC is operating QF5, the 1410 hours SYD-PER first leg altered to depart at a suggested 1530 hours mid afternoon.

I don’t think QF has enough spare aircraft- let alone a specific type such as A332/333

Solution - travel on CX or an airline (not QF) that has sufficient fleet to actually operate their timetable and be able to recover if anything goes unserviceable. Reading this thread should be enough to convince any one that QF are habitually unreliable.

ZNH positioned up to Sydney after arriving in as QF94, so must have been an aircraft swap.

Sydney was operating on one runway due to weather which is probably why the ZNI positioning flight to MEL was late.

The aircraft is inbound from JNB. Normally that goes onto QF11. The QF11 is cancelled due to the unserviceability of OQA, which was cancelled yesterday as QF1 due to maintenance issues.

On Saturday 13 September, A333 VH_QPF arrived ex HKG in MEL as QF30 at 1401 hours, 396 minutes late. It is returning to HKG as QF29, but expected pushback has been further delayed from the unrealistic 1515 hours to 1540.
