Expect an influx to a South Pacific island:

"Dear Friend,

How are you? I hope all is well with your family, friends and pets. I hope this urgent mail meets you in a perfect condition. We have no time to waste regarding the information I am about to tell you, it is an urgent and serious matter.

My name is Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, senior data analyst here at the CERN institute based here in Geneva (http://public.web.cern.ch/public/). CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. You may have seen on the news that, in recent days, our Large Hadron Collider machine has been colliding high-speed beams of energy in order to explore new physics and understand how the universe began. CERN have been adamant that this is safe, however I KNOW THE TRUTH.

The truth is that this experiment that CERN are conducting is extremely dangerous, and could cause global disaster. This experiment has a 95% of causing a black hole, thus swallowing a large area of the planet. The scientists do not want you to know this as they know it will cause panic. However, I can help you.

I am arranging for a number of selected people to be evacuated to a safe location on an island in the South Pacific via aeroplane. You have been selected from random to take part in this evacuation, thus continuing the survival of the human race.

Not an email, but a missed phone call and voice mail from (02) 80272000. Reverse Aust has a reported 92% scam score for this number. Anyway, the voicemail says there is suspicious behavour on the Qantas Money account, but the two numbers given to call are different from the ones on the back of the card. Number is now blocked.

What's annoying is how many businesses send out texts and emails that look and feel like scams but are legit. I got some threatening text from a collections agency relating to some unpaid fee for the release of an imported package. The courier company never pursued the bill at all (never informed me it was due) but sent to straight to a very scammy looking collections agency who would just send a daily text with a link for payment but no details at all. I went to their website and it was very short on info. Finally sorted out that it was legit - I didn't have to pay it, it should have been paid by the sender - and the sender paid it in the end. And this staggering amount that was worth pursuing? $39. Plus after it was paid they still texted me every day saying payment was due (but please ignore if paid!) until I simply blocked them.

Is it a scam when the gas company (which is only for hot water) sends a bill with an estimated read that is 9-10x more then the 4 prior bills (3 of which were actual reads), despite the bill being for a period shorter then any of the prior bills and being overseas (thus not using any gas/hot water) for a week of that period?

Indeed it is - they tried that on me when they changed to a so-called smart meter midway through a billing cycle. Needless to say, everything was eventually corrected to my calculated amounts.

I have no idea where the gas and water meters are.

The power is always estimated because the smart meter can't get a signal out of the metal cage the meters are in. They keep sending people over to replace the modem, never listening to what they are told about why they can't get a remote read.

Maybe request proof from them because it's such an implausibly inaccurate estimate?

For what it's worth, I had the complete opposite for my last bill where their estimated usage for my property (gas hot water + stovetop) was ZERO. Yeah.... right..... I normally send them my own meter reads but was unable to for various reasons. I know it will sort itself out with the next bill so didn't bother to try and correct this one.
