We're looking at MH Y class on their new A330-NEOs on all flights AKL-KUL-NRT-KUL-AKL. MH has similar pricing to FJ on their A330-200s on all flights AKL-NAN-NRT-NAN-AKL

Recommendations for (and why) choosing MH or FJ for the above routes if you're a Qantas Gold member?

You’ll earn significantly better points and SCs on FJ (next to nothing on MH depending on actual fare bucket).

Can’t comment about onboard in whY.

Should be same lounge access in AKL and NRT.

But the transit experience might be better in KUL?

With MH oneworld Sapphire and higher get complimentary standard seat selection - not sure about FJ but likely similar to Qantas policies.

If the fare bucket earns it’s actually more with MH than FJ
One way FJ earns 2013 points and 45 SCs while MH earns 2225 points and 60 SCs as a gold using discount economy. I had a quick look and L seems to be the class for the cheapest MH fares using dates next month which earn as above.

Oh! I was thinking transit through Fiji would have be more ‘tropical’?

As for the OP’s issue, it feels the NAN transfer would significantly cut down on flying time?

Many thanks to all that have replied. I was expecting replies to say, 'you MUST fly on the A330NEO, it's so new (2024-25), with better IFE and free Wi-Fi compared to the older FJ A330-200 (2013) with a smaller IFE, no free Wi-Fi.

J class on MH certainly looks better than J class on FJ, however we'll be in Y.

I think we'll probably go with FJ as the departure times out of both AKL and NRT are better for us.

There is that also!

Yeah, I meant to say that it would be more direct! Probably why MH would earn more for the longer distances?

Hopefully they'd allow us in the NAN lounge for longer than 3 hours as we will be transitting for nearly 7 hours on the way to NRT and 5 hours on the way back.

The Fiji Airways Premier Lounge is accessible for the three (3) hour period immediately prior to an Eligible Entrant’s scheduled departure time from Nadi International Airport. The Fiji Airways Premier Lounge staff have the discretion to allow an Occupant to stay longer where the Occupant is in international transit.

What does QF or JL or CX offer to NRT or HND? [NRT is not in Toyko]
Or another Japanese airport? Not just Toyko
Or a non OW airlines. Air NZ?

If you have time and inclination, overnighting in NAN could be nicer than a 7 hr layover?

Should be no issue with the FJ lounge now that they are fully OW.

BTW, have compared prices via QF (assuming it’ll let you book QF codes?). Better points/SC earn if you can.

Many thanks. QF via SYD, MEL or BNE is signifantly more expensive than MH or FJ. QF/JQ via SYD/MEL also more expensive than MH or FJ.

Yeah, I was quizzing if you can get the QF code (FJ metal) AKL-NAN. But doesn’t look like QF codeshare on NAN-NRT.

Yes, that was my understanding too that QF don't codeshare on FJ AKL-NAN.
No, they DO codeshare AKL-NAN (I can book it via QF) but doesn’t look like they codeshare on to NRT.

The QF Multi-city search didn’t like me forcing in NAN as the transit.
