I endorse recommendations for Eastern Europe, especially Poland.

Polite citizens, good infrastructure including an excellent rail network with comfortable and spotless trains that generally run on schedule on well maintained track, 3.5-4 star hotels that offer excellent value for money, inexpensive tram route connections to stations with good frequencies, a pleasing range of cafes and restaurants, widely spoken English (at least among those under 45), interesting Old Towns and pleasant scenery, although latter obviously not on the levels of Switzerland or Austria.

And I am happy to have recently found out free trams and buses for people over 70 in most (all?) cities.

Just went to probably the most Eastern of Eastern Europe, ie Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and loved it. They very much regarded themselves as European though we might place them as either Middle East or Asian. Armenia was perhaps an exception, I did have a couple of people tell me they are really Middle Eastern.

Surprising really, of the three you would think Azerbaijan would be most inclined to think that way but despite being nominally Muslim, very few practice and they take some pride in being a secular nation.

Did you go by yourselves or on a tour? i would be interested in visiting these places too...

Yeah, we did it on our own but did join a few day tours, particularly in Armenia where we largely based ourself in Yerevan and took day trips. There’s a really good blog by a Aussie lady - Wanderlush (her name is Emily Lush), very helpful with info on how to get around.

Within the cities Bolt and YanGo are great apps for rides, we even did a 2 hour trip in Armenia that cost us under $50, and gotrip.ge is good for transfers. Happy to answer any questions you have but as I said to google Wanderlush is a great start.
