Proserpine is just a rural town (<4000 population) and there’s nothing special there that I’ve ever seen. Unless you use it as an entry to that area of the Whitsundays.

Hamilton Island, on the other hand, has more to offer.

Of course, AFFers may be more interested in ‘the final flight’, rather than the destination.

I guess it depends on what are wanting to do in the Whitsunday's region. Flying in to Proserpine and staying at Airlie Beach can be a lot less expensive for those wanting to do off-island activities such as exploring the outer reef, visiting other islands etc. Paying a premium for Hamilton Island accommodation and meals costs when you are doing off-island activities seems a little wasteful. Many years ago, we spend 10 nights based at Airlie beach and doing a day-trip/activity every second day (sailing, reefs, multi-island cruise, helicopter flight etc.) and then 3 nights on an Island (could not afford HI, but back then there were other options for which a 3-night island stay was achievable). Works for us, allowing a 2 week holiday rather than a long-weekend break.

Then again, we drove from Brisbane to Airlie Beach since we could not afford to fly - and meant we had transport to Shute Harbour etc. I guess these days, adding car rental or land transfer costs from Proserpine to Airlie Beach and/or Shute Harbour may negate the accommodation and meals costs savings.
