Second a/port for SYD news again.

It's on again, the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, has announced a study to look at intergrated transport solutions for the existing and additional airport. It will be a joint study by Federal and N.S.W. Government.
Albanese stated that there would be no Government speculation about individual locations including the lauded Richmond strip. Badgery Creek has been ruled out, the site to provide stimulus for jobs and economic development for Western Sydney............

Yes even when the international terminal was being constructed there were calls for a second sydney airport.The terminal was opened on 3/5/70.

There were items on the SYD TV news last week touting Richmond RAAF Base as apossibility. As in The Castle, tell 'em they're dreaming.

• the strip is too short
• there's a town at each end of the strip (imagine all the noise abatement issues
• transport to and from the airport is pretty marginal
• much higher incidence of fog causing disruption to services

Even if regional or other domestic services were mooted to shift from Kingsford Smith to Richmond, significant work would need to be done to provide suitable teminal facilities.

On the other hand, NTL could be a solution provided that high speed transport links could be established. Forget other locations like Goulburn, CBR or in the hinterland of Sydney. the NIMBYs will kill it off.

NTL could be a choice in the future, but at the moment the FA 18 classics with all their logistics at NTL have priority over commercial craft, and will do so up to around 2017/2020 when the F35 JSF arrive in Aus. If the Gov't could get their act together, they could establish a completely new base, away from the airlines, that will accept the F35 and its service facilities when the first Sqn arrives around 2018, freeing up Williamtown.
Where could they build a new Base ? Go North young man !!!!!!!!!

The only logical response to this is dual landing strips floating off Sydney's coast with rapid transport to the existing infrastructure.
No noise issues, no land issues and can be incorporated into existing infrastructure.

I agree. Even if substantive planning began tomorrow it would be at least 30 years before a brand new airport would be operational.

Study, study.... and more studies... why doesn't the government just DO and BUILD?

Maybe the Federal and NSW State government can contract Hong Kongese and Japanese contractors to build an airport out in Pacific Ocean by reclaiming some land build a high speed rail link and a dedicated freeway. This way, Sydney could have a true international standarded airport that operates 24x7 without curfew.

Edit: +1 to Mr Ed's comment. Sydney could do with an airport that's comparable to HK International.

Building CBR up is an option (well it is according to Mr Snow - the owner of CBR). I think his plan is to then build a high speed rail link into SYD coupled with more flights to other australian cities.

It could work, especially for those people who don't live near SYD airport, or where a high speed link from the outskirts of SYD to CBR airport comes in at about the same amount of time as a trip from the outskirts to SYD airport.

That said I don't remember a time when they haven't been talking about the need for a second SYD airport, so I don't think a decision is just around the corner.

It boggles my mind that Australia does not have a truly international airport.

As a kid I thought our airports were amazing until I started travelling and really saw how bad our airports are. Most are very old with constant hatchet job refurbs and very expensive carparks.

Sydney is Australia's biggest city yet its airport does not reflect that...a real international airport must service ALL areas of its city and surrounds, have multiple efficient transport options and be curfew-free!

Is a country only as good as its largest airport?

Without any reservation, I'd say **** SYD and use MEL instead. At least you won't get hit around the head with any stupid curfew and what not hullabulloo that it causes.

The other alternative is actually develop BNE into something of decent international stature (including transfers from the airport to city, not this early evening closing Airtrain bull****) - give it a couple of F lounges and set up proper feeder flights, and there's another option....until the government(s) or the uppities living near the airport push a curfew on us (then that'll be hell).

We've seen SYD Airport #2 being thrown around hither and thither like Western Australian DST and secession. All talk and no walk - just a bunch of governments wasting money looking busy being knocked back by a lot of ignorant communities that act like they've been the incumbents forever and can bat off any government with a broomstick.

In other words, this is an idiotic and pointless exercise. Some people need a good kick up the backside; others need to be dragged out and shot.

well whatdya expect, he is from one of those select few brisbane suburbs that have been banging on about a curfew for at least 10 years and maybe closer to 20 years. Ever since some change was made at the airport, I think a runway extension/realignment. At that time the flights no long landed over the top of ascot and hamiliton, but instead started flying over bulimba/hawthorn/and probably Rudd's suburb. I remember my uncle whinging about it in the early 90s. When I was living in Tarragindi and the aircraft also tracked over us. (I loved it especially when the 111s and new blackhawks went over)

there was a very good opinion piece written back then about the special bubble over the suburbs in question and how the jet fuel exhaust fumes had floated down onto the bubble and reacted with it to eventually destroy the bubble and now suddenly these people living there were confronted with the cold hard world of aircraft noise. Something that the people living on the other side of the river had mentioned for a number of years, but those voices hadn't managed to get through the bubble on the other side of the river.

A little O/T but related by note.

Many people that are in support of curfew and/or are against airport expansions (all over the country) believe that we do not need bigger airports because...

• Our airports are as big as they need to be
• They can use other airports besides those that "need expansion" (e.g. develop smaller airports or utilise other airports, e.g. BNE, OOL or MEL instead of SYD)
• Australia can't accept any more air traffic, so too bad (should SYD raise airport fees again? a la Heathrow?)
• We should be limiting air traffic anyway (e.g. due to environmental concerns - which is hot topic on its own)

What do you all think about these alternatives/suggestions/rationales?
