Have I caught frequent flyer fever with this routing or what?

I'm going over to Canberra for a one-day event later this month, and I've decided to make a slightly mental trip out of it with QF, which will garner about 8.9k in points and 90SC.

So, flying red eye to MEL, breakfast in the lounge before shooting down to HBA for a 10am Saturday arrival. ~6hrs there, so the Salamanca Markets and a walk around the city should just about fill it.

Back to MEL, a quick stop in the lounge for a hour then straight over to CBR. Have Sunday and Monday to myself there, so Black Mountain, National Library, Museum, Portrait Gallery and whatever else I can fit in before Tuesday's meeting of the minds.

Meeting wraps around 4pm, so shoot back to CBR and fly to SYD, where it's an hour in the lounge there. I could hang around and catch my usual QF583, but for not much extra spend (~AUD 60) I can head off to BNE for another hour before hopping the PER flight getting in around 11pm.

All this for 8.9k/80SC, and crossing one more major lounge off my list - only Darwin left now.

Feel free to tell me that I've lost it :D

On the plus side, my +1 is free for Qantas Club on all those flights.

Sounds like fun. Go for it.

Any idea the $/SC on the "extra" (obviously the PER-CBR-PER bit was a sunk cost, what's the "extra" $/SC ?)

If you really try you could even squeeze another leg or 2 in there somewhere :D

Your asking the wrong group of people...

Most normal people would call you mad, but I don't think AFF members are "normal"

maybe when you have completed your trip you can post a review =) let us know about your experience on inflight customer service - the food - cleaniness of the airplane and toilets - use of inflight entertainment - espeically if you had to sit next to a crying baby for 4hrs coming from perth - ease of checking and picking up luggage etc... have a great series of flights

PER-CBR return is 3,842 Base/40SC for a best price point of AUD674. Earning an extra 5,120 Base/50SC for an additional spend of AUD388, plus visiting (if only fleeting) somewhere I've not been before.

The good thing is this routing will put me 20SC over what I need to receive my first ever 5k loyalty bonus, which might persuade me to spend a few more dollars on a higher grade discount economy fare which I can upgrade to business.

Yes, that'll be a trip report and a half. Have never done one of these before, so I proberbly should do one - and spend the better part of a week writing it up.

Given that my next trip to the USA looks like being CBR-SYD-SIN-KUL-BKK-ICN-NRT-ORD-CUN-DFW I really don't think I have anythig to say other than...

Sounds good!

What about going stopping over in ADL from PER-MEL? Or BNE-ADL-PER? Would it get you even more SCs?

I was thinking about it, but considering what I've already paid for this flight (prices went up on me, so costing about AUD1200 now) and the schedules if ADL was added in, I think I'm insane enough thanks ;)

Also managed to score one of the two upgrades to Business that I want, which is on the PER-MEL, which is a nice A330 w/AVOD and the Skybeds which is very nice. Just waiting for some upgrades on MEL-HBA to be unblocked, if not I can always hold out for an op-up.

it shouldnt add anything at all. on a good fare you can re reoute and get additional points and SC's. for example i had a full y mel-per and ended up in cbr and got cbr-mel-per so extra 20 SC's. airline routing rules are complicated, I think LW is across this sort of stuff.

cheers

You are mad! :p A real frequent flyer would have flown PER-ADL-MEL-HBA-MEL-CBR-SYD-BNE-CNS-DRW-PER. ;) Never leave that till tomorrow what you can do today. Enjoy your trip....

The days of MEL/SYD-ADL-PER fares are largely gone these days. Usually the booking engine will charge you substantially more than a direct flight, in effect, a MEL-ADL, ADL-PER fare.

I did manage to find one at Christmas time this year MEL-PER via ADL which was $2 more than the cheapest direct flight, which also was on JQ. The actual direct QF fare was around $12 more than the route via ADL. That's pretty rare though.

Of course, I booked it via ADL for the extra 20 SC's (return) and the fact I get to spend an hour at the rather pleasant ADL QP :)

Yes you are mad, but only because you could shoot up to Darwin from Brisbane and then to Alice Springs and back to Perth.
(just kidding)

Go for it.
Sounds good.

I was in HBA the other day and didn't even bother to go into the QP because it's on "this" side of security. I was way to hung over and just not in the mood to rush around the place. But, enjoy.
