Qantas goes low octane on WA flights

If there is an onging problem with staff abuse happening, then as an employer, Qantas has an obligation to provide its staff with a safe working environment. Reading the article it does seem as though they have been working through this problem with the unions and their key resource contracts.

Given that these contracts with the mining industry are quite lucrative money spinners, I doubt that it would be a decision taken lightly. Blaming it on cost cutting seems to be a superficial take on the situation.
Totally agree with you.
We have no idea what QF staff have to deal with on these routes. If they are constantly troublesome due to excessive cosumtpion of alcohol, then I support their decision to serve only low alcohol beer.
We've been putting up with it at sporting events for a decade or more, so why not in the sky as well?

Does this even apply in J, I'd expect a reduction in fare if I was flying in J and couldn't have a glass of red with my meal!

Or do these flights not have a J cabin?
The Qantas Link B717's are a single class cabin, which do most of the flying around the state, however you do get the odd Qantas B738, which does have the J seating.

I don't believe wine is being removed at present. Just full strength beer and liquor.

Correct, the wine will remain

Hang on - so they're removing beer with 5% alcohol content, yet leaving wine that has a much higher alcohol content - everyone will just switch to wine if they're hellbent on getting messy!!

It may be stereotypical, but I expect the type of mining industry workers who are likely to cause problems due to alcohol consumption on a flight are not likely to be the ones to order a glass (or six) of Chardonnay or Merlot.

Well time will tell. In ~6 months if the wine is removed from these flights too, there can only be one reason. Seems a little silly still.
