I was told by an Emirates staffer on the phone today that if I check in on line I STILL have to go to a counter to get my boarding pass replaced - even though I'll only have carry on baggage.

She had to go and ask a colleague about this - and she didn't sound too confident. Does anyone have experience with this?

I haven't done OLCI from Melbourne but OLCIs I have done from LGW and DXB both allowed printing off of a boarding pass so no need to go to a check in desk

When you do the OLCI , see if it gives a BP; if so, then you should be good to go

Haven't had experience with EK, but I suspect she is correct. At SIN (and I assume MEL as well) SQ require preprinted BP's to be stamped. I think it must have something to do with immigration, it would otherwise be fairly easy to prepare a fake BP and gain access through immigration.

nessjez, Welcome to AFF!

The OLCI process gives you a printable boarding pass.

It was not necessary to get it stamped last time I OLCIed with Emirates ex-MEL, but it has been a while (~>9 months) since I've flown with them.

What dajop says may now be true. If this is the case, EK should have an express lane for OLCI economy passengers to bag drop, which generally means a much shorter queue. Or if you are flying Business or First EK Melbourne has never had a queue at these counters IME.

Well I've checked in so I have my answer.

They prefer OLCI passengers to front up at the check-in counters so they "know you're there". But I was told I could have got through customs and boarded fine with my printed e boarding pass.
