I am booked in Y on QF128 on 21AUG09 - I've been allocated 52A by the seat allocation system - when I try to change it, it looks like there are no economy seats forward of 52 on the left, forward of 51 in the middle and 53 on the right (Check the image below).

I called QFF contact centre - they said that on their screens, those rows are as forwards as they can see also. They confirmed that it was indeed a 4 class 744 (where the first row of Y should be row 40), but could not explain why all the forward seats were not visible.

Do any of you know what is going on?

This seatmap is consistent with a 14F,66J,40W,187Y layout, otherwise referred to as the Pacific configuration.

Qantas 747-400ER plane or the "ugly sisters" (VH-OEC, VH-OED (ex-Malaysian Airlines) or VH-OEB (ex-Asiana Airlines aircraft)).

Thanks for that. I haven't flown trans-pacific in Y since well before W class was introduced and QF don't fly that config out of MEL to asia, so I havent seen it before.... I would have expected the the QFF contact centre to know this already.

Maybe if you call during normal business hours and get Qantas premium. Outside of these hours the quality of the service can vary greatly.

Yep, row 46 has gone the way of the Dodo on these 4 class 744's.

FWIW, as a WP, your Op-Up chances are very good on this flight:

It was the premium desk I spoke to...

Personally I prefer 58A/K over row 46 - it's not next to the loos and the slide enclosure on the door is a bit further away from the seat (I like window seats) so you have plenty of legroom - but I can no longer ask for it... QF is happy to sell it to me though.

WRT the op-up status, I know - I've been watching the the availability too - it was better when I initially booked - I got the last Y seat and plenty of W and J available. I got a good op-up last night btw. QF29 no longer has F, so statused Y pax get to sit in the W seats (I had 35K allocated), but was bumped with the W pax up to J seats :D so I got a skybed for my overnight flight - yay!

Those WHY 2's, 3's, 4's and 5's almost certainly represent premium seating capacity being sold for WHY fares.
