Re: virgin blue safety fears

The plane was preparing for take-off when a ground engineer noticed the nose wheel had fallen off

I would be interested to know what "preparing for take off" means as I would think it couldn't have been much after pushback or surely it would not have been able to be moved very far?
I guess it makes a change from Qantas stories though.

Re: The Wheels Fall Off Virgin

Noticed this on the news this morning.

The Aircraft Engineers Association is calling for Virgin Blue to step up its maintenance program after a wheel fell off a plane at Melbourne Airport on Saturday.
The plane was preparing for take-off when a ground engineer noticed the nose wheel had fallen off.

Re: Virgin Blue disaster avoided after front wheel falls off plane

Sorry just realised there is already a thread on this :)

Re: virgin blue safety fears

As they say:

If Air Traffic Control makes a mistake, the Pilot dies,
If the Engineers make a mistake, the Pilot dies,
If the Pilot makes a mistake, the Pilot dies.

It is certainly in the interest of the Pilot to keep his eyes and ears open. ;)
You're right.

I'm wondering which report is correct though? Did the engineers spot this or did the pilots on the tarmac?

See what happens when Brett decides to hand the steering wheel over to someone else :p.

So now No News isn't happy attacking QF and has to start with DJ instead?

No News's Black Book (old)
  • Qantas: top bounty / prize
  • Jetstar: second best bounty
  • Tiger: good pay off
  • Virgin Blue: bed buddies

No News's Black Book (new)
  • Qantas: destroy at all costs
  • Jetstar: media bunny
  • Tiger: pathetic, but good for a laugh
  • Virgin Blue: fresh meat

The stark difference in the volume and content of the reader's comments is readily apparent, although there's a lot less defence of DJ in this case. Still, had it been QF or JQ, there would have easily been 100+ comments, most of them probably saying, "I will never fly QF/JQ again, they are evil evil evil evil evil evil (etc.).....DJ are just plain lovely...DJ all the way!"

Then again, perhaps it is true: The most abundant commodities in the world are hydrogen and stupidity. Oh, for the ol' days of flying where it was considered and people who flew actually had a brain and a level head....

One could be forgiven for thinking that here on AFF any chance to sink the boot into DJ is looked upon with glee by certain members who do appear to have Qantas issued glasses.(And no I don't mean wine glasses:rolleyes:)
I'm the first to agree that Qantas gets a raw deal from the media and often it appears that the "journalists" writing the stories have never been on a plane in their life,so idiotic are the stories but commonsense and a balanced view is not something that is handed out with journalism degrees apparently.

No glee gained from this incident; once again I'm still attacking the integrity of the media.

I'm the first to agree that Qantas gets a raw deal sometimes from the media and often it appears that the "journalists" writing the stories have never been on a plane in their life,so idiotic are the stories but commonsense and a balanced view is not something that is handed out with journalism degrees apparently.

I think a fair proportion come fresh out of uni with good intentions, then get quickly poisoned by editors and other pressures to sell their souls and ethics in order to keep their jobs. Worse yet, perhaps their souls have already been taken away at university.

Poor b******s. What a waste of talent (i.e. at least in QLD, you need an OP of 1-3 (approx equivalent to a UAI or ENTER score of 97-99) to get into Journalism, yet you only need an OP of 8 (approx equivalent of a UAI or ENTER score of 92) to get into Engineering. Yep, what a joke.)

I certainly wasn't referring to you anat0l ,in fact I don't have any particular members in mind, just it does sometimes seem that any reporting of a
story even remotely critical of QF etc is viewed with suspicion (and I'm guilty of that myself) but anything about DJ,Tiger etc is classed as 100% accurate.

No offense meant.:)

None taken :D

And that is true - we are a bit more critical of the QF-attacking stories than the others.

At times, it is not that QF are at fault prima facie that we have a problem with but rather the incident has been misrepresented by the media (e.g. the wrong aircraft type, the wrong plane, the wrong conditions, extent of the matter exaggerated, etc.). Or silly things like where it is not QF's (or sub in any airline here for another) fault yet it is painted like it is (e.g. the CAT incident involving QF72).

With sensationalist headlines on this one, you have to question whether the full story is being told here, too.

Stop Press Stop Press - wheel falls off plane two days ago!

I am surprised no one has questioned the timing of this "piece" being made public, is today a slow news day or just a day when shares are trading hands......???
