Hey All,
I was watching the news this afternoon, and they mentioned a Qantas plane losing cabin pressure... They only mentioned it briefly, and I didn't catch the details..

I've searched around, and can't find anything - so now I am thinking that maybe it was one of those ads for the news, where they show a couple of past big headline items... I'm guessing it was VH-OJK's "explosive decompression" from a year back..

Anyways, I'm real confused.. I was certain this story was on the actual news, and not an ad..

I have been a bit out of it with the flu though, so who knows, it could have even been a dream (I've been having some weird dreams this week while sick ... :) ) .

Believe I also heard this re a flight from Auckland

I'm surprised (but pleased) that "No News" doesn't have banner headlines with "Qantas passengers in mid air horror!" or something similar.
I've had a good look online and so far have only been able to find the ABC story and the News.com one.
Even the av herald hasn't picked it up yet.

I also saw that story on the Channel 10 news; I had a quick look online to see if there was anything to it but nothing was being reported, then I went out, so haven't had a look until now, nothing in the paper.

I'm so disappointed in nonews right now, they have let a QF bashing opportunity go without so much as a single "I hate q(u)antas comment" :(.

Just think of the headlines they could have used... "QANTAS terror as a plane flying over 8KM high loses all cabin pressure!!!"

And of course the comment from pax stating "I thought I was going to die...." (lets face it, it doesn't matter if there really is a pax that believed that)

Just when you think you can rely on the media they go and let you down :!:

Thanks all.. Good to know I am not going crazy and hearing things!! :)

Sounds like quite a minor incident, although would be interesting to know what would cause the cabin to lose pressure as it did..

There could be numerous causes.

Look up the ATSB web site for the incident report, though I'm wondering whether the report will be in the NZ equivalent site instead.

Sometimes i really can't believe you would call it a mid air drama. I have been on a plane that has had a similar problem and no big deal. The pilots did umm, what they should have done, return and replace (part or aircraft), go again ! safety first always.

I did not see the UK papers pick up my aborted BA flight a few weeks ago with any such mention of the huge drama tag that it would have attached had it been a QF plane.
And my incident was more notable for me because the pilot said he personally was not happy flying to LHR with the defect. It was not a requirement on the MEL. I found that out when i was talking to him and i just said you mentioned you were not happy to make the flight so does that mean it was not MEL requirement... and he said yes. Knowing the situation i agree, for a short flight do it but for a long one no way.

So why do these things not make news in the rest of the world ? do Australian news having nothing better to report on ? it would seem so.

'Twas in The Sunday Mail this morning, although only given a tiny square in the middle of the paper (about two paragraphs).

IIRC it was also misreported as being a 737-400, not a shaky stalwart 737-300.

From the news.com.au article it sounds as if at the most it was just an annoyance for passengers. Masks didn't even drop from overhead.

flightstats (the most reliable of all sources...)

Good enough for me until proven indubitably otherwise. :D

(I regard it the Wikipedia of flight statistics. :p Ooooh...that's a dangerous thing to say....)

I thought QF's statement said it was a 734? According to flightstats (the most reliable of all sources...) QF116 was originally sched to be operated by a 734, but was changed to a 733 after it did it's u-turn....
I have an confirmed it was a 734 - JTS; JND was the substitute - it's amazing what you take for granted (I always assumed the avherald site was accurate).

Anyway the problematic aircraft was scheduled to do an hours test flight 3pm AKL-AKL on Saturday as QF6172, and another such flight Sunday around 9am. It has been back in operation since yesterday evening.
