Re: Tiger Airways to double Sydney-Melbourne flights

Looks like they don't plan on giving up on the market any time soon!

Afraid I would have to be "loaded" with a different substance before you would get me on a Tiger flight again.;)

So today's the day that Tiger goes up to nine flights a day between Melbourne and Sydney. In response, Jetstar is upping to 5 a day later in the month.

Will be interesting to see how this all plays out......

Was browsing Tiger's last night and noticed all MEL-SYD's for Today were all sold out, so mabye they have found their goldmine.

So come end of this month there will be an extra 14 flights a day from Tulla compared to 4 months ago. Surely Virgin must be starting to feel the pinch, especially during off-peak times of the day. Most of these TT/JQ fares seem to be sub $50.

Yes I'll believe goldmine when they break even / turn a profit!

Forgive my ignorance, clearly Tiger are operating out of the budget/regional terminal in Syds, but which concourses? - are they stealing DJ space or JQ/QF Link space?

Obviously I don't use that terminal much!

On Wednesday they were using a gate on the DJ side of the terminal. It was right up the end.

At the prices being charged the term Gold Mine is not really appropriate.

They must still be losing money on these flights.

Agreed!

Fares of $28-$48 one way are not sustainable, as a full load of passengers would be around $6840.

A quick guess at the fuel used for this sector is around 3000 litres.

AvGas is more than $2 per litre.... = $6000+

4 cabin crew at $20 per hour for 2 hours $160

2 Pilots at $?? per hour $500??

Plus all the other maintenance costs, landing fees etc etc....

You get the idea.....

I've been flying heaps out of the budget terminal (for regional QFLink flights) and yes it seems that Tiger are roomates with DJ 99% of the time, have seen them once in the JQ/QFLinkg wing of the terminal.

Wonder how DJ likes that

There are only 3 gates on the DJ side that they dont lease, 38-40 I think. I have seen them use of of QFLink's standoff bays also.

I'm sure they love it... but they don't have a choice, they don't own the terminal/concourse.

I actually thought they had fully leased the concourse however (hence my original question) the post previous indicates they weren't fully utilising it so a Tiger snuck in the back door I guess... I'm not 100% on how they work that terminal.

  1. Jets use Jet A1 not Avgas and it costs a lot less than $2 per litre.
  2. There are a lot of Pilots around that wish they were paid $200 or so $ per hour.

I was saying that I did agree with you that they are losing money.

So now are you trying to say that since all my maths is wrong  they are making money? Since whatever gas they use is so much cheaper ?

Stick with one side of the fence.
