OK what's going on here? I always check the seatcounter site before I fly and there does not seem to be any relation to actual aircraft loads. Usually seatcounter shows heaps of seats but on boarding it's sardine city.

Online check in seat availability (QF) also doesnt seem to match loading. Sometimes I have plenty of seats to select so i figure a less than full flight or there are no seats to select so I figure flight full. Wrong!

For instance I'm flying QF31 SYD-LHR today and seat counter shows plenty of seats available but check my trip and online check in shows all full.

Could be a codeshare as mentioned in a pervious thread, so you can't select seats allocated to the other airline, but most of those seats are free for some reason.

Nup.

305 days before a flight, if C/M/T returns a seat map it's gone into what I call "pre-flight" mode. Unless the flight has really light loads mosts seats will show as allocated.

E/F shows it correctly with many seats "Q-Blocked" (which generally show as allocated with C/M/T)

Seat counter is generally quite accurate - it returns similar results to E/F.

The seat map for this flight, still over 1 month away, does not show anymore and the availability appears to decrease. Would this availability suggest that the flight is relatively full in WHY?

Given they are only willing to sell 7 economy seats in the B bucket. I would say it is rather full. I would say there is only 2-7 Y seats left.

I would hazard a guess there are NO why seats left on this flight - or , to put it another way, that Qantas have sold more WHY fares than there are WHY seats on the flight.

Qantas are often prepared to sell Y+/J/F seating capacity for high WHY fares if they believe they are unlikely to sell them for Y+/J/F fares.

And to go with all the other hair brained decisions I have made in my life I should have stayed put in 58HJ WHY exit row seats instead of moving to 37AB premium economy seats offered as WHY. I think I would have had a far greater chance of op-up to business class seats from WHY exit row seats than ordinary run of the mill premium economy seats....
