Return of Wifi on Virgin Australia

But that's a shame about it being patchy, damn unreliable satellite internet is annoying :/
I actually think the issues might be with the onboard board connect wifi. Other airlines use Intelsat and don’t have the same issues (or at least not mentioned online).

Out of interest, how many here have had relatively positive experiences with the new WiFi on VA?
Just to clarify, I'm only referring to being on an aircraft with it activated.

I’ve had it a few times now and it’s usually worked well. I’ve been able to stream multiple episodes of Netflix shows with only the occasional buffer, and messaging apps worked like they did on the ground.

I did have one flight (VH-YID) where it kept forgetting my login and I had to constantly re-enter my surname and seat number. Even then, when it stayed connected, it was still pretty fast.

Apart from that I’ve had positive experiences with the new wifi, but it does seem I’ve had better luck than others.

When do you get that symbol?
A day or so before flight?
Can you see it on you upcoming flight?

Am I safe in assuming only on flights within 24 hours?

The VA flight status page shows flights up to 3 days before departure, so you can currently see up to the 12th March. I have a slight suspicion the symbol reflects aircraft that have the hardware for wifi fitted, not necessarily the aircraft that has the wifi switched on.

If you want to know the specific registration for your flight, Flight Radar history displays it 2 days before departure. If you keep track, you can see the different aircraft changes that might occur to your flight.

Don't know the tail number but this OOL-MEL 13:55 flight today has no wifi and the IFE has no flight map. The cabin looks newish but there's no divider between J and Y, so no rope.

Edit: fixed a word

That flight was operated by VH-IJW, an ex Silk Air aircraft. I don't think any of the old Silk Air places have been fitted with satellite wifi yet and also probably explains the lack of flight map.

I flew on one of these today OOL-CBR - took a bit of effort to get the IFE working.
