Time for a new safety video QF?

So, a bit of a lighter topic that isn't about bad food, ticketing issues or delays or lost bags...

The other day I was sitting through the umpteenth rendition of the QF 100 Safety Video. QF have been 100 for 3 years now.. and sure, that's how the pandemic has made most of us feel I reckon, it's probably time for a redo.

Further, with QF bringing new fleet types on over the next 2-3 years (A220, A321, A350) you'd have to think a new one is around the corner.

Now we've had a lot of same same over the past decade or more when it comes to QF. I'd like to see a departure from these things. Most definitely not more "double shots maaate", "Hello Captain, Hello Skipper" or that cringe olympic team one....

So I was thinking - with the recent link up with the ABC, what if QF did a safety video with...

wait for it....

hear me out here.

Bluey.

I was just reading how popular Bluey is worldwide. Huge in the US etc - the characters are well known, cute and grab a lot of attention. You could have a theme about how Bluey is going on her first flight or something with her family.

Now perhaps not to have the whole thing animated - but an integration of the characters with live action perhaps could work in a fun kind of way to get attention. Sure, it could easily be cheesy, but could also really work (think NZ's Lord of the Rings theme)

Doesn't have to be too cutesy per se - Bluey is good at being "real" when it wants.

Of course something like this would get real old real quick for road warriors, but so did the old Double Shots and now "this includes e-cigarettes - whatever they are!" line.

However I am no marketing guru so... have at it community. If/when QF does a new safety video what would be a good theme or way to engage pax?

Let's get some ideas going. Sounds a bit flasher than this [current vid] old girl...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

To be honest, as long as I never have to hear the following in a safety demo ever again:

Hey Bec
Fellas! Two flat whites?
Double shots mate
Big night last night?
Your aircraft has great coffee too

I don’t care what they play 🤣

The current video is one of my favourite safety videos of any airline but do agree it’s a little long in the tooth. I still enjoy it though.

Why can we only have one version? Run the current one and Bluey at random, or on odd/even flight numbers etc. Would extend the life of both versions.
Well that's an idea to mix it up!

I must admit the other day on my flight they accidently ran the Indonesian version for a few seconds which was... different :D

I wonder how crew would feel about that. They have to put up with the videos 10000x more than us as pax.

I guess we know they have different versions for domestic and for each fleet type so it doesn't seem too difficult to perhaps have more differences across fleet types and potentially flights, but it might also be an added PITA for crew to know oh this is flight needs this one or whatever.

Certainly don't mind the idea for variety.

Good one @RooFlyer - totally forgot about good 'ol Bargearse. hilarious.

Now that would be a video!!! Perhaps a niche audience but still... :D

The "Your aircraft has good coffee too" (channelling @sudoer) was on for at about 5 years wasn't it? I think they did minor updates every year or so but the basic premise was the same.

One thing that does strike me is how long the QF video is, the version on youtube is more than 8 minutes long. The AA video is only 4 minutes. - and the QF one isn't even bilingual (like the Air Canada / Air France etc ones are).

But please no, the Bluey idea is terrible. It would be massively cringe.

Virgin Blue was also named after Bluey?

It is not. It's an old Australian thing of calling a redhead "blue/bluey". VB predates the show by almost 2 decades.

With new narrowbody aircraft not getting screens, I think the days of the safety video are numbered - it will be audio only like on Dash 8s etc.

Regardless of airline, I think the great Jerry Seinfeld best summarized in-flight safety briefings the best:

There are good reasons why airlines are required to demonstrate the operation of seatbelts, and point to the locations of exits.

They aren’t doing it for fun… in an emergency situation simple things like operating a seatbelt mechanism that you don’t normally use can be confusing. Same for exits, people can forget an exit is just one row behind them.

Maybe not so much that stuff, that's fairly simple.

However, actual accidents in the past suggest the two main things pax do incorrectly is putting their mask over their mouth but not their nose, and also inflating their life jackets inside the aircraft.

After sitting through the current one way too many times, I'm over it. It just goes on and on and on. Cover what needs to be covered and be done with it. Forget all the marketing fluff. It just puts people to sleep after experiencing it more than a couple of times.

I don't think a safety video is going to help resolve this issue. I think Covid just showed us all how stupid so many people are that they think a mask doesn't need to cover one's nose.

Remember the 8min version is the QF promotional one and I am fairly sure the whole thing was never used on actual flights. it's absurdly long I agree.

Most cuts are edited fairly reasonably these days. Maybe 2-3mins. It seems to me it's been cut a little more since it was first rolled out too. When it was first on flights it seemed much longer. It still feels long now, but it's not horrible (and international sectors get different versions too).

Fair enough. Do you have any suggestions?

While they may not have seatback screens, they may still have general in cabin screens? I'm not too sure on that but it's a fair point.

I still think for the international fleet of widebodies they will still have videos either way.

... and taking their carry ons off!!! rummaging through overheads to pull their cough out also seems a common one.

sigh.

The part about the safety video that I find rather silly is right near the end. Words to the effect of..

“Now it’s time to put all your things in the overhead locker or under the seat in front etc etc…”

By the time they get to that part of the video you’re often well into the taxi (on domestic) and not a good time to stand up to get to the locker.

The fact that very few people stand up probably indicates that very few people are listening.
