Perth Airport, considered the worst capital city airport in Australia, is set for a $3 billion upgrade over the next 10 years to transform it into a transportation showpiece.

Westralia Airports Corporation, 99-year leaseholders of the airport, has unveiled its master plan for government approval to essentially rebuild the airport into an integrated facility.

Another year, another plan. If only plans made the airport better.

Maybe they should have a referendum to decide on the plan..... It would then get voted down as it means change.....

+1. It is frustrating but it is something you get used to over here;)

IMO they should just copy the whole Adelaide design, lock stock and barrel.

Adelaide domestic / international is fantastic.

But we're talking about WA here when talk of any change gets you funny looks... from what I've seen people here seem to accept the airport issues as a part of life - totally unacceptable when some regional airports and those in other capital cities in Oz are so much better.

A friend of mine who flew into Perth for the first time from Singapore (Changi) couldn't believe how shoddy the international terminal was.

There is - find the Click Here at the bottom of the page :)

To be fair, it is quite small. I had a little trouble finding it at first too.

Right down to a great big "Welcome to South Australia/Adelaide" sign eh! :p

I'm sure I've seen these plans somewhere before though. Even though they were supposedly posted on the 18th May.

An expensive pointless exercise if anyone ever mentioned it. DST already swallowed up 4 such exercises just to requalify the status quo.

There's been so many of these proposals, it almost seems like a perennial thing. Having said that, the GFC pushed back several of the BNE airport proposals - unless WA is more gung-ho than QLD (or similar comments about the said private owners), I can't see this plan actually being more than gloss on paper (so to speak).

Plus, I don't have a lot of faith in the WA government to actually pull their thumbs out of their a**** and actually see to supporting this vital infrastructure upgrade.

Well the surplus is down to $650M in WA this year.. so maybe they are trying to encourage more investment.

Then again they have actually done some work on the roads surrounding the airport, so maybe hogs do have wings..

I don't think there is anything particularly new in these plans, more of formalising things into the master plan.

Having said that, it was interesting reading some of the forces that exist on planning the way forward.

- A number of airlines that operate domestic and international services want to consolidate (wonder which ones?)
- A380 services expected after 2015
- Wingspans of 787's

Nearly every year the newspapers in Perth were getting on the bandwagon drumming up support for DST. Most of the Gen Y people I used to work with whinged that they had not been old enough to vote for it before etc etc. With a bit of luck this will put the issue to bed for few years.

Some times political forces are such that things like this happen.

Interesting to hear that SA farmers want a vote there now as well :)

There are some things happening, so maybe this will get up.

Another proposal to upgrade Perth Airport! Why am I not surprised?

I wonder when they will release the next proposal to upgrade Perth Airport?

They've got some money now, although a bit short of the $3 billion that was first mentioned....

Westralia Airports Corporation's long overdue expansion plans for the much maligned and overcrowded Perth Airport were given the green light yesterday with the approval for $882 million in financing to fund new terminals and significant upgrades.

The finance package, comprising $740 million in new debt facilities and $142 million from company shareholders, will refinance bank debt facilities and fund the airport's substantial capital expenditure program.
