digital film is cheap, unless you make the mistake of buying an aldi (medion) card which fails and because you haven't downloaded the shots, you loose 800+ photos!

Tripods? I need one for travel and as my camera lens setup is quite heavy, it has to be light to go in my carry on, hopefully.

There are quite a few photographers on here, or partners of people on here, I'm interested to know what they use.

Manfrotto, having said that when I do some trips I take an el cheapo which I can throw out at the end of the trip. Depends on subject the destination and how much luggage I can carry with me.

My Canon has the ability to take the photo in RAW and JPEG. I always use this and back up everything at the end of the day.

I create a folder with the date in reverse order and brief description, e.g. 2019 09 27 MEL City sights
It then has four sub folders, JPEG Original, JPEG Copy, Altered, RAW

Once all of the photos have been downloaded onto the computer and the folders filled as described, I then back up that days folder onto an external hard drive. At less than $100 for a terabyte drive it is cheap to travel with. Check everything has been properly downloaded and that i can access the photos. Then I format all of the camera cards I've used that day.

While photos are downloading from the cards I charge all batteries and clean the camera, filters and lenses. I also put the camera(s) back on the basic settings , i.e. standard speed and aperture settings having often adjusted them for early evening or nights shots. Nothing worse than taking a quick couple of photos in the morning and realising that you're still using night settings.

On the other hand, having less shots made you be careful, and not treat the camera like a machine gun.

I set up my shots carefully, but when there's a piece of rolling stock rolling through an intersection at 50km/h+ with pedestrians and cars trying to photobomb me, a machine gun approach (drive set on Continuous High!) ensures I might get one or two shots without aforementioned cars, pedos, trees, poles etc in the picture: like this one (one of a burst of eight shots of the second 2019 Melbourne Art Tram):

I have to use the burst function if I want any rally shots. A guy I was talking to at a rally in Germany used to be a professional photographer, he still has all his stuff including a Hasselblad. In most cases he said it was focus on a spot and hope you pushed the shutter at the right time.

Some stuff from Sardinia this year, as is except cut down.

Even using high burst, I still missed some of this one. Obviously the pros get to stand in better spots, but they do take risks, one photographer died in NZ 12 months ago, he was so absorbed with pushing the shutter that he didn't have time to get out of the way of the car heading towards him.

I have one big regret with photography.One of my registrars in Tasmania when doing locums offered to teach me how to take good photos.i had plenty of excuses such as not wanting to get up at 5am to get the best light.
Today that registrar is a professional photographer.He is a go to for the Venice Biennial and leads National Geographic photography tours especially to Iceland.It would cost me quite a bit to get what I could have for free.

I feel your pain.
A friend of mine ( a scientist not photographer) takes brilliant photos including this one used on the cover of a scientific journal.

I think there are some people on here who have the Sony DSC-HX90V. I used to regularly download photos from my camera to my iPad with the Sony Play memories mobile app but they have updated the app and since then I am damned if I can get it to work. Does anyone have any issues with it or is it a PEBCAK error.

No ... I download my pics via SD card transfer to my laptop. I really got to hate to Sony 'play memories' software so deleted it after not very long with my original Sony camera. There is a SD card -> iThing adapter that you could use if you went off the Sony PM software.

My latest adventure has sounded the death knell for my last FZ200 (I have had 2)..
It was, in it's hey day just plain brilliant, …..f2.8 from go to whoa…using a small sensor
So now I have to buy something else and it's not easy at all.., compromise compromise compromise

I was recently asked to do some shots for the family of friends. Six kids from about 4 to 12, three pairs of parents, and the grandparents. I found a really easy prop that was attention grabbing for everyone when I wanted it...I rotated all of the kids through the role of assistant, and let them loose with a Nikon 7100 and 35 mm lens. Old enough gear that I could risk it, but my fingers were crossed nevertheless.

The kids, predictably, shot a lot of frames. Most were rubbish. But they managed to catch a couple of gems. And whilst their parents were distracted, so did I....

I think most of the really great trip photos don't use zoom. Basically Ive come to the conclusion that if zoom is required then I am not close enough to the subject.

This is a loaded statement.. perhaps designed to light up a quiet list..
I beg to differ.. for me there is never enough gain/focal length /zoom..BUT powerful magnification mostly involves a loss of brightness so it's all a compromise.

Sure, but my pics aren't all for a TR . Details of a cathedral's exterior, a deer on an adjacent hillside etc.

I could drive an hour or so to get a closer view of a sunset on a snow covered peak, or I could use a zoom

Ouch.That would knock out 90% of the photos in my TRs.
I didn't think they were that bad......

This last TR was unusual for our trips. Buildings and food. No need for zoom. I will still take my Sony next trip but will use my phone more than i have done in the past.

My D800 is starting to show its age. Some of the dials and buttons aren't behaving as reliably as they did. So, it was time for a replacement...

Now we have two D850s!
