Surely the answer is to open au.hotels.com or booking.com, set your max price per night and pick something close to the Ringstrasse. You won’t go wrong!

Near Stephansdom down toward fleischmarkt hopefully you can still find Zanoni & Zanoni gelataria. Absolutely brilliant.

Depending on dates, may or may not be within Arbo's budget for this trip, but for others following the Vienna hotel search, we really enjoyed the Alstadt Hotel.

We stayed at the Hilton Vienna Park for a few nights a couple of years back and can happily recommend it.

It’s located next to Stadtpark, and is a 30 second walk from Vienna Mitte station, which is where the airport train arrives in the city.

Nice area and is walking distance to Stephansplatz etc.

Also highly recommend. Stayed here in January and got a King corner room. Spectacular views of the city, close to good coffee and transit options. While not in the heart of the old city area, its just a short stroll and a nice quiet area.

Rooms are modern and spacious.

Has anyone had any experience with the Hiltons in Vienna? I've got a small amount of status and points with them from a recent US trip so this might be an option.

Stayed at the Hilton Vienna Park a few years ago. Would happily stay there, rooms large and modern. Vienna is a great walking city (parks and relatively flat) and the hotel is well situated. If you do nothing else, have a genuine schnitzel in the hotel restaurant- best I’ve ever had!

We have stayed here several times: Schlosshotel Römischer Kaiser | G&S Hotels | Das exquisites First-Class-Hotel im kleinen Barockpalais

It is in the Inner Stadt, in a pedestrianised street, near the Annakirche.

Excellent choice! My Wife and I stayed here in may 2018. Great breakfast and coffee served as well!

On my upcoming Europe trip I have a free weekend in Vienna.

Can anyone with recent experience recommend a hotel (preferably < $A2600 per night) and any worthwhile tourist activities to do for my 36 hours there? I'll be travelling on my lonesome...

I've stayed at the Beethoven Hotel in the Secession district. Close to the Naschmarket and an easy walk to the Ringstrasse. Great service and they even put on a free concert on Sunday nights.

Try a tour of the Opera House and the House of Music for something a little different.

I'd actually suggest a day trip to Bratislava, it's a short ride, cheap and while you're there you can go to #1 Slovak Pub for a cheep and cheerful (but v. good) meal.

I did that in 2017....took the bus there, walked around, had lunch there, then took the boat back to Vienna.

Have a look at the Do & Co hotel. Above St Stephens cathedral train station, great modern Austrian restaurant that is famous, and not expensive!

Off topic as it's out of range, but an FYI for another hotel option. We stayed at The Guesthouse - fantastic location, little boutique hotel, brilliant service (for example, it was Mrs C's significant birthday and her sister contacted the hotel from Aus to organise a surprise birthday cake for her - they handled the whole thing brilliantly). Location is on edge of Alt Stadt near museum, couple of blocks to Spanish Riding School, coup[le minutes from the Ring strasse.
