How will Ukraine Situation affect travel

We've been forgotten! Perhaps they think the border is still closed.

Its because we have not banned Russians from our airspace, all the bans were reciprocal.

We don't have any flights from Russia so it would be a bit pointless other than symbolism

Private jets might be another story....

Isn’t there a whole other thread for discussions on the policy, political and actual response to the situation? As opposed to the effect on travel that this thread is for?
Several posts not related to the effects on travel have been moved to the general discussion thread. As previously noted, please keep this thread to discussions about how the situation in Ukraine will affect travel.

What, you want a thread on how the Ukrainian situation will affect travel where we can’t discuss the situation? It seems to me the affect on travel is intricately linked to the policy, political and actual response, e.g the responses above as to why US flights still allowed.

No - there's a whole other thread for detailed discussion on those matters.

I note that Boeing has just banned the provision of spare parts to Russia (although there's no doubt plenty of ways around this from other maintenance organisations) and the US has banned Russian controlled/operated flights from their airspace effective tomorrow.

Do we know what reservation and departure control systems SU/S7 use? Imagine walking in to work and your airline has no reservation and departure control system, indefinitely. Unless they use local systems, shutting them out of Sabre/Amadeus etc would be pretty crippling.

Edit: SU use Sabre.

The US has now also banned all Russian (owned, chartered, controlled etc) aircraft from its airspace.

Now that's going to be a potentially big problem for those with oneworld awards.
IMO a long term issue that Japanese and Korean airlines will have to deal with.

They cancelled one day. They are flying again from Friday (at least to LHR) on the slightly longer route (+3 hours).
Though if there are extended flight times long term then it's going to be a problem for connections.

Sabre has terminated its GDS agreement with Aeroflot

Air Serbia is profiting from the situation by increasing flights to Moscow.

Don't forget your Tiny Teddies, kids!

Due to the closure of Russian airspace, Finnair is making changes to its flights to Asian destinations (and Russia).

We continue flying from Helsinki to Bangkok, coughet, Singapore and Delhi and from Stockholm Arlanda to coughet. We will avoid using the Russian airspace which lengthens the travel time by some hours depending on the route and for example the weather conditions. We have our normal meal service on these flights, and due to the longer travel time, we recommend you also take some snacks with you.

really interesting, informative and nuanced video bout the effects of the Ukraine war on Russian aviation. Talks about the percentage of aircraft that are leased and thus affected by sanctions, the impact of the sanctions on export of aviation technologies for new orders and also for spare parts and maintenance and the impact of the SWIFT sanctions on ability to pay. Very worth a look.

Mentour Now is the you tube channel.

Another major consequence of this conflict is the rocketing oil price. If Russia's oil exports get halted watch the price soar.

Airlines will start parking older aircraft again. Higher airfares wont do anything to help kickstart travel post pandemic either.

Interesting to see what the flight paths are like when the bans are reversed - this is the aircraft that took the expelled diplomats from JFK back to Moscow (they had special permission from the US to fly - but as you can see did not overfly any land on the way back). (the white parts are outside radar range so are estimates - they did not overfly Iceland).

Obviously the bans to airspace only apply to sovereign airspace so they were free to fly through oceanic airspace even though it was controlled by Canada / Ireland etc. .
