Asia Miles points extension request because of Covid

Hey guys,
Just a quick update on this - which I'm very happy with.

As per my earlier post above, my flight was cancelled and points credited back with an expiry of 30 April 2021. Just logged into today to check my balance after seeing Qantas opening up international flights, and noticed my points had expired which I totally forgot about!

I got onto Asia miles live chat and explained, and they were happy to reinstate the points for an additional 18 months, and also keep them rolling over as long as I earn asia miles points (which I can transfer to from my credit card).

A good outcome! From having asia miles with an expiry date to having asia miles that can keep rolling over!

Just waiting until we can start travelling overseas again

@prozac thanks for your helpful feedback. I have 620,000 AM miles expiring in October and I have already had J tickets to Europe refunded to me from flight cancellations last year.

If I transfer say another 1,000 miles from Amex points to AM will this be considered activity to convert to the new system?

Also does the AM website show what miles expire under the old and new system?

cheers
leyy
Sorry for delayed response, I somehow missed the post.
Yes, a transfer is considered activity.

No the website does not show new and old. I am pretty sure they are now all regarded as new points.

Gday

I just went onto live chat and asked if I could get my expired points reinstated. He said yes wait two weeks and they should be there. They are valid for another 18 months but will be extended if there is any account activity. It was only 5,000 points but I will be using them. A good outcome and only took a couple of minutes. Well done Cathay Pacific.

Pele.

Had burned some miles earlier in the year end of Jan, prior to expiry - had to cancel because of lockdown and zip chance getting exemption to WA. Points dropped back in, and I suspect now fall under the new expiry conditions (ie. points activitiy) - so at least buys me some time again.

That's certainly great news and congratulations to those receiving the grandfathering treatment.

I have just checked my Asia Miles account upon learning of the good news but unfortunately in my account, my balance is still shown as 2 tranches (earned before and from 1/1/20 respectively), with the points earned before 1/1/20 still carries an expiry date :(

I’m still dirty with Asia Mikes that they wouldn’t provide me with any concessions during COVID & I needed to redeem my points for merchandise. I’d resolved never to send any more points to them (I’m not a valuable customer in any event give I’ve never bought a revenue ticket so hope this post is t too ranty).

I might have to change tack as have heaps of SQ points that are about to expire and whilst they’ll get extended for the time being, that won’t be forever.

Kudos to AM for changing their program to indefinite expiry based on regular activity. Here’s looking at you SQ.

Just as a data point: My wife has 25k AsiaMiles expiring on 30 Sept 2021. She logged into her AM account today and chatted with an agent and got them extened by another 18 months without any hassle (and without paying any fee) in less than 5 minutes. In true HK-style, the agend typed "Due to exceptional circumstances, it has been extended. with thanks."

I am amazed how many have no difficulty extending miles with a phone call when I have tried a number of times without success. No probs though as the system worked for me in the end. Just can't get over how jammy some are. :)

I think as with all these things with CX, speak to the robot first if you can't speak to someone F2F. In my experience, CX staff over the phone is not a good experience but it always worked out well (in the past) if it is F2F.

With points expiring tonight and a dearth of flights out of Sydney I contacted AM with the suggestion they extend my miles. They did so willingly for another 18 months! First I emailed last week and received a positive if somewhat vague response indicating they would "try" some time in the next 3 weeks. I think it was lost in translation but I like things black and white so last night I contacted again via chat and they confirmed my points would be extended.
All good.

An addendum to this story. When the end of December ticked over my points disappeared. It has been a nervous wait and finally today the account was updated with points re-instated as promised.

Just gave them a call to request the renewal of my miles expiring on 31 May 2022 and they accepted. (131 747)

Seems to be an offer until 31 March to extend it.

Thanks for the update. Did you have to transfer credit card points to meet the 30,000 Asia Miles for the free conversion or did you just call for a renewal?

Did your points change to the new system where they don’t expire?

I will do that for the remaining miles As they expire in April 2022.

I just burned 360,000 miles to go to Europe in J for two Pax in December 2022.

I am keen to avoid a HKG transit due to the uncertainty. How did you go about booking the partner airline tickets?

It was super easy, you can book most oneworld partner airlines on the Asia Miles website.

I found that JAL had really good award availability.

You can transit through Tokyo without quarantine or issues but you won't be able to leave the Terminal.

Just be careful if you transit through Tokyo that you don't land in one airport Haneda (HND) then Transfer to Narita (NRT) to take the final leg, as you won't be able to leave the airport under current border controls.

Obviously this will change in the future.

I find the Asiamiles/Cathay site clunky to search flights on partners. Did you book on the JAL site, if so how do you do that using AsiaMiles?
Any reason apart from destination you would not book through NRT instead of HND?

No Book on the Asia Miles reward website it is very easy.

see below screenshots for a search with plenty of J reward availability.

Try this link:
I get no availability right through to 23 Feb 2023.
Do you search return, one way or multi-city. For instance should I look at a different (multi-city) route to get to my destination, something less popular.

EDIT: I called AsiaMiles who answer as Cathay. They could not find availability and tried to explain that there award seat availability for partner air;lines is yet to be updated.

Okay, sometimes you have to change routes to find availability.

Some other websites can show monthly reward availability (QF, AA and BA) so you could use that to find availability then book on Asia miles website.

I checked availability again on QF then tried AM without getting a hit so I called them. They said they could not access the QF availability.
