Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

The study is only about predeparture testing. In Australia we had much wider travel restrictions than that and couldn't keep Omicron out, or keep it from spreading once it got out. Qld was actually running the line "we won't be able to keep omicron out" before the borders opened and indeed it arrived and spread, particularly in the gold coast, before the borders opened. WA reckoned on being a fortress, but it wasn't impregnable and it's out and about there.

Allowing tourists in to AU and getting rid of the mask mandate on flights would help.

Absolutely, the airlines will put the flights on if they have paying customers but the first of these (and to a degree the second) is totally strangling demand.

NSW actively encouraged its spread, so no one else had any chance of doing anything but go with that flow and let it rip (albeit with some token restrictions to slightly reduce the spread speed).

But that's now history and its how we are where we are.

Actually yes, I forgot about that. He came to my door campaigning and intentionally spat in my mouth. That must have been what did it.

But somehow Victoria achieved the same end result while supposedly doing nothing wrong.
Even if the spread was intentional, we still have Dom to thank for blasting the international border open. Otherwise our transition plan would look like NZ which stretches till October!

Thanks Dom - I'm heading to Europe next month. Then back here for the Grand Prix.

At the end of the day NSW didn't actively promote spread but they just happened to be the ones that ended the insanity in this country.

NSW State Govt could have told the truth about the failure of NSW Contact Tracing since Dec 2020.

Of the Dec 2020 leaks from NSW Hotel Quarantine - the sources for 2 were never officially found.

Of the subsequent leaks from NSW Hotel Quarantine only 1 of 14 have been solved.

The NSW Govt quietly cut the number of personnel involved in contact tracing by over 500 late in 2021 when it was formally recognised (in house) that they had totally lost control. Remember contact tracing in Greater Sydney was stopped in mid-July apart from health/aged/disability facilities & schools. It no longer included phone interviews or even speaking to a human for all - mainly sms messages only in English despite the major areas they were sent to had English as a 2nd language if at all.

Woolworths broke the secrecy in early July when they posted on their Facebook page that NSW Health had informed them that they would no longer be notified if anyone who was Covid positive had visited any of their stores or worked in one.

The May 2021 outbreak - the Eastern Suburbs fund manager & his wife - never had the source found despite then hundreds being in the 'Gold Standard Contact Tracing Team'.

Too much hubris and arrogance - 'let it rip'.

Of course if there was a Federal Quarantine system in existence, instead of all having been shut down & sold off to developers in the search for th Budget Surplus Holy Grail, then the band-aid solution of tourist hotels not fit-for-purpose would have been a non-starter.

None of that provides another option. This “let it rip” mantra is getting old. It’s a virus. The options are lockdown forever, or live with it. NSW, Vic, SA and Qld are following identical trajectories however NSW cops the blame because it’s on trend to attack the conservatives.

Fortunately, in our 90%+ vaccinated population, it’s providing to be nothing more than a mild cold. Clearly, however, getting that message across is a bit of a struggle.

There may have been intermediate options like keep unvaccinated locked up past Christmas - which probably would have gone down like a lead balloon. They tried the self-regulation of mask usage, but that didn't seem to work so they put the mandate back, and limits on huffing and puffing venues.

I know you keep saying it's nothing more than a mild cold but I have several friends who have been very unwell (one compared it to a very severe flu) and two weeks later are still nowhere near 100% better - and yes triple vaxxed

And, the options are what again? Lock down? That’s been proven to be ineffective.

Work chatter seems to think August at earliest
I read somewhere that the current date is near the end of July for SYD and no date yet for BNE and MEL. Though that SYD date would be tentative at this stage and depend a lot on their being sufficient demand.
