The numbers of those testing positive surely have to be underestimates.

Absolutely.
If your vaccd and couldn't get a test over Xmas and NY, better just to isolate and wait till you go negative on RATs..

If you do an official PCR five days later, you just add to your clock.

To add to my prior story about my niece.
Early collection from daycare on 24th after advised of positive test amongst another child.
My niece tested RAT positive on 30th (after negatives on 25th and 27th - tough with a 3yo). PCR (taken on the 28th, day 6 of probable exposure) came back positive on the eve of the 2nd. Parents still RAT negative that night. Both did PCRs on morning of the 3rd almost hoping (not that anyone wants Covid but hard to avoid with a toddler) they test positive so they can get out of isolation on the 10th (which will effectively be 17 days home isolation for the family).

Worst case is they have a late onset or secondary family transmission and the isolation is extended.

So today it got closer.I was on for the weekend and that means seeing quite a few patients in ED. On Sunday there was a child that tested positive for Covid. Three that I saw are said to be close contacts though as far as I can make out only 1 is a true close contact. The contact was said to be in the ED waiting room.
But one of the patients was already in a ward at the time of the supposed contact.Another never got into the waiting room as there is a triage set up to get in.This fellow had a letter from his doctor saying his Hb was 30. He didn't have to pass Go to get into the ED.

Inevitable that I will be exposed. Just a case of when.

Given the 'known' high profile people in Adelaide who have it I don't understand why everyone hasn't been yet. If we are all going to be exposed to it, now, for us, is as good a time as any. Fully vaxxed. No work commitment for a few days. Oximeter and Panadol at the ready.

I personally wouldn’t be thanking Chemist Warehouse for anything. Horrid business and owners.

Just remember, the US and UK aren’t handing out things for free… taxpayers are paying for them all and they are paying a lot. But I get your point and I personally think that people on low incomes should get them free / subsidised access.

But a free for all is not what we need…. Though I do smell a political backflip coming!

Here is the ABC continuing their fear campaign in NSW. What a headline. And it carries on.

NSW has recorded a new peak in COVID-19 hospitalisations and daily infections, with 1,344 patients in hospital and 23,131 new cases.
Another 140 COVID patients were admitted to hospital in the latest reporting period, sending the state's hospitalisation total past the previous high of 1,268, recorded on September 21 last year.

The number of patients in intensive care rose to 105, up from 95 the day before, with 27 people requiring ventilation.

Sounds terrible doesn't it. Cases and hospitalisations above the delta peak.
But further down some other facts.

At last year's peak, however, the number of people in ICU was significantly higher at 242 patients, 112 of whom were on ventilators

Not only that but -

NSW Health has revealed 72 per cent of COVID positive patients admitted to ICU since December 16 were infected with the Delta variant of the virus, not the Omicron strain.

So cases >1000% of the Delta peak daily cases.

Hospitalisations up 6% on the delta peak.

ICU cases down ~ 60%

Ventilated patients down ~ 75%

And that despite 72% of ICU admissions in the last 19 days being due to the delta strain.

As time goes by and we finally look back at the pandemic the press will have lots of questions to answer and should make a lot of apologies. No wonder we have so much fear.

I've got 12 kits sitting in the cupboard at our apartment in Singapore - 6000km away, which were handed out by the government a few months ago. I should have packed them when I came to Australia before Christmas. Could have used some of them and sold the rest (joking we'll need some of them on return to SIN).

Just received my PCR result. Positive. Second time around for me after a bout early on in March 2020.

Somehow I managed to get tested in a drive through with only a 3 hour wait yesterday and get my results back early this morning.

Heavy cold and a slightly sore throat. Trying to isolate from the rest of the household which includes 3 other adults and two young children. I managed to successfully isolate with the original strain but remains to be seen this time. Hope I'm wrong but I suspect it wont be as successful this time around.

Was due for my booster on Jan 24th so I will now need to see what the advice is around that after being positive.

I believe the UK includes positive rapid tests in their official results.

If so then the UK infection rate is probably below Australia's at present.

Evidently UK tests have a QR code so you can upload a positive result.

In Australia it is only pcr positives that are recorded as a case.
