Just a bit on the Southern Tas lockdown.

A guy flew down to Hobart from NSW (via MEL), despite having his application to enter the state rejected twice. He was nabbed at the airport and taken to hotel quarantine overnight, planned to ship him out next day, back to NSW.

He refused to wear a mask. He absconded from HQ (HOW is a question that hopefully wil be revealed soon) then a positive test was returned.

Immediate known close contacts put into quarrantine, also casual contacts.

He has been totaly uncooperative and it seems has been lying about his movements. A visit to a supermarket after he left HQ and before he was caught again was only realised when members of the public identified him and alerted authorities.

A 'close contact' (I think the household where he went to) also left their quarrantine.

It is all this uncertainty, his time in the community and 2 days gap in clarifying his movements that sparked the lockdown (plus, as I've said before, I think out CHO has been just itching to bring on a lockdown :( ).

Absolutly everyone I spoke to in the city yesterday afternoon and here in the little town where I live accepted the lockdown with a metaphorical shrug of the shoulders and 'oh well, we've had it pretty good up to now'. I'm not so sure it will only be 3 days.

The weather here is absolutley carp this weekend, so that will help  :)

I'm curious to know how Joe Public can identify someone who has escaped quarantine. Are pictures shown on the media of escapees or something?

He refused to wear a mask when transported from the airport to HQ and was photgraphed by the newspaper - todays Mercury on-line (and the image has been pretty much everywhere this week!)

But wasn't he ID'ed before the lockdown?
What a jerk. Does he live in Tasmania? This deliberate Karen act will ire the locals.

Yes, he was IDed when he was first nabbed off the aircraft and was photographed when being taken to HQ. He was notorious from that point but name not published. The area where he went after escaping HQ was widely publicised, for obvious reasons. Was Hobart's northernmost suburbs.

From all accounts he's from NSW. Not very popular, especially as it seems he's actually been lying about his movements after escaping HQ.

EDIT: No more positives announced yet, but might be too soon to show up. And I'm happy to say no panic buying at my local supermarket!

Isn’t Hobart at 70% fully vaccinated?
If so you may see none apart from his household close contacts who one would presume are similarly unmasked and likely unvaccinated.

The Hobart area is probably one of those places where everyone knows everyone else. 😉

Something like that. EDIT: Tasmania 83% first dose, ~68% two doses. But 90% is the State hurdle for 'opening borders'. But then they will say - oh, we need every LGA 90%, not just state average etc etc

Actually, its a bit interesting. Until the NSW and Vic case surges, Tas was leading the nation in vaccination rates, with vitually no cases (no local transmission). Now I think we are 3 or 4. Contrast with the other largely covid-free states of WA and QLD - lowest rates. Maybe we're not so dumb after all.

So, Tasmania is locking down for zero local transmission?

Sort-of. Certainly if you can stop an outbreak like Sydney/Melbourne, they've gone for it, with strong local support (as long as its only 3 days, which I don't think it will be).

But they have been saying for a long time that we WILL get an outbreak, can't stop it etc etc. I guess its a case that, while on a roll, try to keep it going.
