The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Another Pfizer swap done, this time with the UK for more doses this month :)
Post automatically merged:

UK swapping 4 million Pfizer with Australia. Start arriving tomorrow.

Will help greatly with getting many more of the 16-59s fully vaxxed this month, and should enable reinstatement of 3 week gap for new bookings.

Fantastic news.

The chances of opening up later this year are increasing.

"This means from Downing Street to down under, we are doubling down on what the Pfizer doses are here in Australia this month.

This will enable us to bring forward significantly the opportunity for Australia to open up again under the national plan. The bring forward of these doses I think should be a great cause for hope right around the country. The doses will be distributed across the states and territories on a per capita basis so they can all get on with it.

Whether it is at the GP clinics, with the GPs, or in the state based hubs, they will be able to move forward and see these doses get into arms and get Australians back to where we want to be, living with this virus, as soon as we possibly can."

Extract:
A Sydney doctor has been hauled before the NSW Medical Board after he questioned evidence behind Covid-19 vaccines and promoted unapproved treatments, including Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin, in a case that will test the limits of what medical professionals can say publicly.
Anaesthetist Paul Oosterhuis, who has practised in NSW’s public hospital system for more than 30 years, will front the board at a hearing on Friday, where he could be stripped of his licence after he made Facebook posts more than two weeks ago.

I hope they throw the book at him.
There is no place in medicine for dangerous conspiracy theories trumped up as evidence.

From the ABC again, Tasmania the latest to jump on the mandatory vaccine bandwagon.

Wondering if the wider public services in the states happens too at some point, because frankly I want to see the toys thrown out of the pram from people who don't believe the vaccinations work...

Acting Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has announced mandatory vaccinations for healthcare workers in the state.
From October 31 workers in public and private healthcare settings will be required to have had one dose, or have evidence of a vaccination booking.

This is going to put a lot of pressure on NZ. JA has indicated they may have a deal to get more supply but has not announced anything since - and that was about a week ago.

I assume Australia get 1m per month.

Does that mean we swapped out our entire Q1 quota?

Not saying it’s not the deal Australia needs now, just trying to ascertain details.

No, all 4m at once. There's 10 million doses arriving in September total from all sources and types. We return the UK ones back in December when they need to run boosters out. It's a smart way of juggling supply and demand.

The ABC report doesn't go into that detail but quotes the PM as saying "shipments would arrive in Australia in the coming days and weeks." To me that indicates it would be arriving pretty quickly and not spaced out at something like 1M per month but who knows for sure? I can't find any press releases yet detailing exactly what is happening but that is the trend, of both sides of politics, to announce broad news and then dribble out the details.

No, much more than that -2 million per week in Q4

8.8 million Pfizer for September + 1 million Moderna

Then 3 million a month of Moderna in Q4

We will be handing them out like candy.

But we can’t be swapping much of Q4 quota, because won’t we be actually using them. maybe December ala Singapore, or later

Well based on the revised September and October Pfizer supply, everyone 16-59 should be able to be fully vacinated by end of October, provided they go back to 3 week interval for Pfizer and 4 week for Moderna.

We will need some boosters in December for people who got Pfizered in Feb and March, so it will likley be some of the November and mostly December doses that are swapped, as we will need to start boosters in earnest from February and March.

I thought I heard ScoMo say we were due to get 11m doses in Dec, so we wont need that many for boosters that soon.

Expect with the announcement we will see more younger people who have yet to have a first dose cancelling AZ bookings for Pfizer again.

Not sure what you are saying, but we only need another 20 million doses to get 100% for 16+, plus say another 2 million for 12-15 - call it 22 million.

A lot of them will be AZ - even if it's just second jabs (PM confirmed we've given out 10 million AZ already)

At roughly 10 million a month of mRNA ,we'll be at 100% by early November. We are going to have a lot of excess vaccines that will be donated to the Pacific or swapped for boosters. Of course they won't all be in arms by mid November but that's easily managed.

Pretty sure the PM said we will be giving them 4m from December deliveries
Presumably they will go to the UK directly from where they are made in Europe(?). There'd be little point flying them all the way to Australia only to send them back to the UK.
