Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I'm opposed to shifting the goal posts because of the slippery slope argument. It's likely even younger age groups will be approved for the vaccine later this year and there will be calls to wait for them to get vaccinated as well.
As I am too - which is why I started this in response up thread with my comment about not trusting them to keep the goal posts still in post #9533.
My worry is that, as always, the government will respond to polls. And the poll I quoted shows that 58% of people apparently want this goal post moved to include 12-15 year olds. I totally agree that then it will be 5-12 year olds and then babies, on a slippery slope basis. Meanwhile, those of us at the other end of the life cycle just keep missing out on things that matter to us, because there is always someone "vulnerable" to be protected. I'm not advocating for a total individualistic, don't care about anyone else attitude, but rather just saying that the goal posts have been set on "medical advice". They have expected us to comply with "medical advice" this whole time, and now people don't want to do that, just at the point I was feeling some hope. If the pollies listen to the polls as they usually do, then I reckon they will read the tea leaves and include at least 12-15 year olds in the targets. ACT Chief Minister has already said he will be doing that.

Wonder how things would play out if say:
- NSW only opens up to fully vaxxed at 80%
- Vic only opens up to fully vaxxed at 80%
- International depatures ban is lifted at 80% of eligible 16+ only to fully vaxxed.

There is only a small window to make fully vaxxed "look" mandatory.......

Based on today's media blitz by the PM and NSW authorities press conference, no goal posts are being moving.....(eg not making 12-15 part of the target vaccination).

My guess is Vic and SA think similarly. ACT probably will be dragged there. The other Qld, Tas, WA, NT - can't say....
In my view it’s only the two vaccination laggards making all the noise against opening up. Vic have already started making the right noises and ACT, NT doing well in the vaccination stakes.

The thing is most people departing will want to come back. We have many many plane loads of people overseas already wanting to come back so it would make sense to give them a week or two to come back before opening the flood gates to let others depart. This would give them an opportunity to get back hopefully with somewhat reasonably priced economy fares compared to what it costs to come back at the moment.

And he can back this up with stating this is the health advice he has received and is confirmed by the independent Doherty Institute modelling.
A simple solution is for the first 2-4 weeks open up to fully vaccinated p[ax but keep the 3 month stay OS guideline in place. We really do need to start getting bums on seats of flights in and out of Australia.

you realise that will screw over alot of people who wants to visit for 3-6 weeks to see family for Christmas that they haven't seen for 2 years just to give some unrequested 'abundance of caution' ?

stopping fully vacc'd people from traveling while you wait for your populace to get fully vacc'd IS the abundance of caution, dont need more.

Not sure I'd characterise the 80% of eligible 16+ as the abundance of caution.....YMMV

Many more positive stories in the FB groups about exemptions being granted esp the 3 month stay category. Reunion seems enough to be compelling. Three months from now is December assuming people don't book to travel immediately.

considering the vast majority of the world has opened up and started interacting with each other considerably before 80% while we continue to live in the cave. i'm happy with my evaluation

If already fully vaccinated - go now and enjoy Autumn, then Winter......assuming staying with family. "Most" of Australia (by population) already lockdown - probably past 80% for those unvaccinated

It would be one of the few levers the federal government have. You want international students? Then this is the deal.
I'm pricing up SinAir right now to put in a bid. I did have an award booking for the trip over but nothing on the way back. So simple, Adelaide - Sin - LHR and return. Daily trips still, into Adelaide with SQ. Qantas all via eastern states.

Good for those that can go for 3+ months. I’d only consider that if it becomes clear that travel for a shorter period won’t be possible till well into next year.

Well, true but I'm not exactly sure what repercussions would be if your situation changed once in UK and you had to return urgently.

I hope you get to go @Pushka. I'd love to be doing the same, but Seat Son will be working crazy hours ont wo of his very big cases between November and end of March, so no point in us going there until after that. We really missed the perfect window for him in Aug/Sep

It's May. Just have to be content with looking at an international booking in next 9 months!

The PM spoke about home quarantine again in the Press Conference today: Press Conference - Canberra, ACT | Prime Minister of Australia
"Once we get to the point, and that's certainly the case once we get past 80 per cent, and assuming, and this is an important development that needs to take place between now and then, is home quarantine needs to be a viable and widespread option for people who are travelling overseas and returning - indeed, people who are overseas and have been vaccinated with the vaccines that are recognised in Australia. For that to occur, then we need to get these home quarantine models up and running in states and territories across the country."

So I guess a get out of jail option for the PM to stop travel would be if home quarantine is not approved.

We need to see National Cabinet sign off on home quarantine.
