Question for our resident medical experts.

Is there any benefit in getting double vaccinated with both AZ & pfizer?

I am already fully vaccinated with AZ and now have an opportunity to get pfizer as well. So want to know if there is any benefit in getting both the vaccines.

I know in NSW that when getting either brand they ask you if you've already had a vaccine and will not let you proceed if you have. Are you sure they will let you get Pfizer since you are already fully vaccinated?

myDHR let me book it. In fact, I was getting constant reminders to book my jab.

Back when we were going to be primarily using AZ in the NT, there was a school of thought that said we might have to get a Pfizer shot later- at the time the concern was the South African variant which AZ/J&J didn’t seem to cover so well

I will see what the current thinking is when I get a moment

"A new British study confirms reports that a combination of the AstraZeneca and BioNTech vaccines triggers a stronger immune response than two doses of AstraZeneca.

British study: Mix more effective than two AstraZeneca shots

But new studies show that combining two different vaccines could be more than just an emergency solution. Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that patients who received a dose of AstraZeneca followed by a dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine four weeks later developed a higher number of antibodies than those who had received two shots of AstraZeneca.

As part of their Com-COV trial, the Oxford researchers administered various vaccine combinations to 830 volunteers over the age of 50. Their results showed the highest number of antibodies was developed by people who had received two BioNTech jabs, followed by those who had gotten a shot of AstraZeneca first and BioNTech second. The reverse order still yielded more antibodies on average than two shots of AstraZeneca. "

In fairly general terms- this is an interesting initial study but 830 patients all over the age of 50 is not sufficient to make a recommendation IMO

Also one needs to take vaccines in a way that will be seen as acceptable for where you are travelling. Two doses of the one vaccine is what is widely accepted.

You make a good point, I have been been fully vaxxed with AZ but if I can get to the US next year I am of the understanding that I will need to get pfizer or moderna as AZ is not approved by the US.

I know someone who was double Pfizerred very early (frontline medical) and just had an AZ jab here in Australia!

But less than double Pfizer.
So it's really just consistent with the initial impact of Pfizer, which from other studies also tails off more quickly - and possibly drops below AZ in efficacy after 4-6 months.

At the moment the US does not require proof of vaccination to enter. I am finding that individual companies have introduced policies that require evidence of vaccination with an FDA approved vaccine.

I am now getting a little nervous that the US will not lift its ‘ban’ on entry from the UK in time for my return in early October. The general feeling is that the US, when it does lift its ‘ban’ will require evidence of FDA approved vaccination.

AZ is supposed to be applying for approval this year. I went ahead and had my first Moderna shot and will get my second on Saturday as an insurance policy in case US does require an FDA approved vaccine for travel there.

it has been a bit of a mess in Europe and difficult to tell whether it is just the usual government incompetence or if there was a bit of ‘Brexit politics’ playing out.

I'm double vaxxed AZ - 2nd vax in June. Once they finish providing vaccines to all who are eligible, I am hoping to get a Pfizer booster even if it means paying out of pocket. Of course I'm hoping for a roll out of a booster program, but I am not confident that this country will get there any time soon.

The problem will be what happens in 6 months time. Will the Pfizer fade occur?I would think likely.
The UK has found that a time between the 2 initial AZ shots of 42-45 weeks actually gives better results than the 12 gap.
They also showed that a third AZ shot given 6 months after the first 2 gave higher antibody levels than that seen immediately after the second shot.As well side effects after the third dose were less severe than after the first 2 doses. The clots should not be an issue as 97% occur after the first dose.

Now I have had 2 AZ shots and my initial thought was to have a Pfizer booster.I'm now thinking I would like a third shot to be AZ again.

I've had 2 AZ jabs and think that I would like Moderna as a booster. I'd be prepared to do some vaccine tourism to get it, if necessary.

AZ is fine but I don't like its efficacy figures compared with the mRNA vaccines.

A lot of our healthcare workers (both double Pfizer and AZ) are thinking exactly the same thing and want an AZ booster…

The earlier double Pfizer people are actually quite worried now and as I alluded to before some are taking matters into their own hands…
