Arguing that a curfew is not a significant incursion upon people's freedom when their freedom is already significantly incurred upon (by the same public health orders) is a really bizarre statement from Brett Sutton.

So Victoria locks down to prevent a "Sydney style lockdown", but by the end of August they will have done six weeks lockdown to Sydney's nine. Looks like a "Sydney style lockdown" without the cases.

What is does show is that lockdown is not solution number 1 to this virus anymore. Worked well as a policy last year, but not sustainable anymore. I'd like to think that if the governments are so worried about hospitals overcrowding, they might have I don't know... boosted capacity in the past 18 months....

You mean that bit where we flattened the curve, while the state governments readied their health systems. That's an idea that didn't seem to take hold in many state governments.

Just finishing up the press conf from sydney today, it does seem worrying that they are talking about watching case numbers after 80% the whole IDEA of high vaccination is watching hospitlisations / deaths and ignoring case numbers is what we have been told and now they are REPEATEDLY saying case numbers after 80%

Yep, this is the point when the consensus starts to break down.

I think if nothing else, this latest outbreak in Melbourne should put a stop to any state trying to impose its system of dealing with Covid on another. I think a lot of it is pure luck.

So many cries about non-compliance in Sydney, yet we're seeing the exact same thing occur in Melbourne. In fact day for day, Melbourne has had more cases in this outbreak, mostly in lockdown, than Sydney did without being locked down.

Nothing stopping you buying alcohol from Dan Murphys or Liquorland and doing the same thing.

You missed the rule now on not removing a mask ioutdoors to consume alcohol.

Poor behaviour observed, and rules changed now to address the problem.

Where's the enforcement on the streets? It's a bit hard to hide a "pop up beer garden" as he calls it. And from my experience, those things get noisy.

Not sure why you think there is no enforcement? Many reports of people being fined etc. Unfortunately some do not do what they should.

And yes gatherings have been broken up, and a large one planned prevented from happing.

Selfish people exist, and will seek to end and break. One person in this thread was advocating walking with a different person each day which is hardly minimising mixing. That is 7 households, and if those 7 then walk with others you soon get scores of households.

I think it was noted Peacock Inn was promoting a "walk, talk and sip".

The venue itself denies that that was the case. It seems like it was more impromptu. And a local private residence provided the music.

Sorry it just seems ridiculous to me that you need a rule to stop people removing masks to drink alcohol, when they shouldn't be there in the first place. Even a blanket "you can't drink alcohol outside" would have made more sense - but I guess they were trying to force it in the health order.

'Absolutely outrageous behaviour': Victoria Police chief says the actions of a few have not been good enough​

Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton says there has been concerning behaviour in the Melbourne community over the past week.

“We’ve seen some really disappointing behaviour, we’ve seen some selfish behaviour, and some absolutely outrageous behaviour,” he said.

He gave examples including the Richmond pub crawl as well as some near the Peacock Hotel playing music in the park and people sitting in the street drinking.

“Every one of these things is just totally unacceptable and everybody knows they’re doing the wrong thing,” he said.

“We’ve seen so many different breaches, it’s just ridiculous and it has to stop.”

Either rule would be ok. Point being is that there now is a clear rule that police can enforce and probably more importantly it makes it clearer to all that people cannot l linger anywhere outside drinking alcohol and socialising. Simple is good for police.

Absolutely nothing illegal about walking with 1 other person per day, outdoors and masked. No state requires that it is the same person every day. All parties involved are fully vaccinated, live in the same LGA in single person households and no physical contact.

So all much safer than those who go to the supermarket everyday and interact with a cashier rather than self check out.

And many times safer than what you do by entering more than one other household to give care, some of whom aren't fully vaccinated.

I"ve not broken any rules, and given my suburb has zero cases am confident going for a walk with another person isnt going to change that.

What we were talking about something that was already illegal, by putting an additional rule against it, to make it doubly illegal (you're out here drinking, there's a fine, and you've removed your mask, there's another).

Certainly in Sydney many areas are subject to a ban on alcohol drinking in public places - this is a local council regulation. Victoria has the same in many areas.

If NSW Health were concerned about it, they'd make a rule against it.

They put in the rule about only one person shopping at a time (I saw Woolworths refuse entry to one member of a couple yesterday).

You're free to live your life as you see fit, but you can't enforce your rules on others.

If only we’d had a single set of National rules established 18 months ago… we’d never be in this position. The mistake was the on again-off again rules from state to state. GB actually had it right in May 2020 when she said “this isn’t over until we have a vaccine”. So why did we try to end it early?

It's just sad to me that otherwise (allegedly...) intelligent people who are in government fail to see that continuing to laud the majority while punishing the majority leads to people losing interest and not listening to what you are saying.

Maybe those in government are not so intelligent?

Well… yes. But I do expect a retreat on that. At some point we need to stop testing for the fun of it. People lining up for hours like there’s a petrol shortage is getting to the point of being insane.
