With the cyclonic winds in central Qld and the closure of Mackay airport today, I'm just looking at my plan to travel to central Qld on Tuesday. I notice that Qantas have a notice on their Major Disruption page advising of a free (lower cost) change of flights. Wonder how my Jetstar tikect will fare. No guidance on jetstar.com yet.

Qantas website said:
Tropical Cyclone Hamish is currently affecting the weather conditions in North and Central Queensland coastal regions. Flights to and from Hamilton Island and Mackay will not operate today, Sunday 8 March 2009. We are monitoring the situation closely and will update this site should the situation change.

The following outlines the options available to Qantas passengers who are holding a valid ticket on Qantas for travel to and from Far North Queensland, on or before 9 March 2009 and who wish to make changes to their bookings.

· Passengers may, for no additional charge:

· Make date changes to an existing itinerary;

· Re-route a ticket to a different destination operated by Qantas. The new fare must be of equal or higher value. No refunds will be given;

· Store the value of the ticket in credit for use anywhere on the Qantas network.

Based on what I have seen, I believe that you will be alright heading to Central Qld.

The cyclone is predicated to change paths and head inland around Hervey Bay.

That's a decent distance away from the Mackay region.

But then, who knows what will happen. The last time a cyclone crossed as far south as that, Brisbane ended up being flooded considerably.

One to watch out for.

No problems on Tuesday for Mackay.Hamish is already well south of Mackay and it has been taken off cyclone watch.On Tuesday it is still forecast to be out to sea but turning west to aim for Hervey bay.Possible crossing of coast on Wednesday.
I spent today cleaning up all the loose objects around the place as i am heading off to Sydney tomorrow.The sunny coast will almost certainly get a drenching mid week and it wouldnt surprise me to see MCY closed on Wednesday.

My trip includes ROK & GLT. BOM website doesn't give much cheer either.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Hamish poses a threat to exposed coastal and island communities between Saint Lawrence and Bundaberg [including the Percy group of islands and Heron Island]. The cyclone is expected to maintain a southeast track parallel to the coast during the next 24 to 36 hours.

Yes but if you read the flood warnings it doesnt seem as bad for your travel-
"The heavy rain bands associated with Severe Tropical Cyclone Hamish have
remained off the coast and have not affected the coastal areas between Mackay
and Yeppoon during today.

The rain bands are expected to remain off the coast for the next 24 to 36 hours,
with heavy rainfalls not expected to affect the coastal streams between
Bundaberg and Maryborough until late Tuesday and Wednesday."

See no problems.This morning it has moved further of the coast and now predicting it will stay east of Fraser island.

Crash 8 services to / from Gladstone, rockhampton and mackay have been cancelled today,
