Really trying to stamp them out.

VA2's cost base would mean they would not be making money on that fare.

Neither would Rex.

Perhaps better to say with their cost they would be losing more money than Rex on that fare. But they probably selling much more higher fares to compensate for this "marketing expense".

Jetstar are offering $30 fares on the route too (But $51 with checked luggage).

Jetstar has a far lower cost base than VA2.....

The market power held by Qantstar is appalling.

It was projected by analysts that QF got their cost base down to pretty much VA1 levels as well. Though of course now Bain are in charge they have been ripping costs out of VA2 big time as we all know.

I’m not exactly sure where Rexy lands though.
 
If only Rex had bought used Airbus aircraft instead of Boeing. Then they would be raking in the dough, from people who rightfully don't trust Boeing or their dodgy planes.

I don't think there's anything "dodgy" about the Boeing 737-800, which Qantas, Virgin and Rex all use and has an excellent safety record.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the 737-8 either, I would be happy to take my family onboard any day of the week. All airlines take engineering and maintenance very seriously. Remember the Qantas 737 pickle fork incident it was handled professionally and now nobody even talks about it anymore. The 'pickle fork' fault: Why the problem facing Qantas is no risk

They leased what they could get hold of cheaply, and had a reasonable supply of qualified staff looking for work..

I guess VA2 don’t want too many people sampling Rexy, or checking JQ out again and deciding ‘oh they aren’t thattttt bad’ and are happy to lose money for a period of time on that route while it builds back up. Makes sense especially when you have a giant US PE company paying your bills!
 
Of course there will be a price war 'til QF and VA destroy Rex; and once that is completed QF will destroy VA, again.

Just goes to show QF (JQ) and VA do not need any government assistance of any kind, be it for staff or equipment. Obviously the shareholders/owners are all happy with losing money rather than sharing the air and engendering real competition.

It's time the airlines stopped having their special protection. It's no longer the 1940's and they should now be considered "common carriers", with all the legal responsibilities that entails. But that will never happen as still being paid at full rate politicians and never-worked-so-hard-in-their-lives public servants still want access to the Chairman's Lounges don't they? We are never "all in this together" are we?

It also makes a mockery of any high speed rail between Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne. Why spend billions of taxpayer moneys for something which could never recoup the money and never be as cheap. You know, same as NBN.

High speed rail would be useful, and far better than NBN. But we all know how politicians and public servants salivate when they obtain entrance to the Chairman's Lounges.

Proper functioning broadband (assuming that was what NBN was intended to deliver) is way way more critical to the economic success of the country than fast rail between Sydney and Melbourne/Brisbane.
