Citibank rejection window

I've seen a few comments that mention that if you're rejected for a Citibank card there is a "window" of several (I've seen 3 and 6 mentioned) months where any new application will automatically be rejected.

I applied for one of the Coles cards which I believe it actually Citibank. I had a $15k card I was in the middle of churning, a $2k card I was hanging onto but I didn't realise a previous $6k card that had been closed, still hadn't actually been fully closed, by the bank. I will need to consult the credit reporting websites next time, before applying for a new card to see if a previous closure has actually been finalised.

Once the $15k and and $6k are actually closed, I want to apply for the Coles again. My salary and credit history should not be an issue so I assume I was rejected due to the $23k total of my other cards.

Can anyone provide any more concrete details of this "Citibank automatic rejection" that will help me decide whether I should just wait longer or perhaps try my luck at applying?

Welcome to Citibank. I doubt that anyone on AFF has actually cracked the code.

There will be a few theories.

many years ago i was told there was a 9 month wait between any citi branded products. also when you close your credit cards it will take some months before it reflects on your credit file. you are best to ask for review on current application and send them proof a letter stating other bank cards have been closed.

Thanks for the heads up. If the cards I am waiting to be struck off aren't soon, I'll apply again and send proof to show they are actually closed.

no point in reapplying you will be wasting your time as system will keep on automatically rejecting you if it hasn't been 9 months between applications or credit limit increases on any citibank branded product . you will keep taking another credit hit to your file making it worse. just call and quote current app ref number and ask for review and upload them the letters saying cards are closed if they haven't changed status to closed on your credit file.

Cheers. Will do this!

Speaking of application windows, does anybody have experience with applying for a card at a second brand within the Citibank portfolio, when already holding a different Citi card (and when you've already held that card for more than a year, so not a second application in quick succession)?

For example, holding a Virgin Money card and applying for a Qantas Premier or Citibank Rewards card - or holding a Qantas Premier and applying for Citibank Rewards?

Curious whether Citi is more likely to approve the application if you still hold the first product (as they're more familiar with your credit history, ability to repay etc and you can't be considered a 'churner' because you haven't churned that card), or whether closing the first card is better before applying for the second (so that your total credit limits are lower at the time of application)?

It's Citibank - given they are so inconsistent and everyone's circumstances are different, I don't think you should base your decision on anecdotal evidence.

Personally, I only keep 1 card from each provider at a time, but I don't push the churning as hard some others so It would only be one new application per provider about every 2 years.

I did recently notice the following term in the Qantas Premier offer that I hadn't seen before: (footnote 1: Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Cards | Qantas Money )

We may decline your application if you have previously taken advantage of multiple introductory offers such as, but not limited to, bonus points or a balance transfer on a Citigroup issued credit card facility.

It doesn't appear on other Citi cards I have looked at. Seems to indicate they might start rejecting churners.

That's extremely interesting... I wonder what parameters they will use to enforce that. Hopefully conditions like that don't become mainstream.

Just applied for the titanium but i hold a Citibank premier free for life card so we will see how I go

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I currently hold qantas premier platinum (Citi) and I am planning to cancel. However, considering applying for Citi rewards 150k velocity offer before end of Jan. I know examples of people canceling a Citi card and applying for another and getting rejected, so want to avoid that. But don’t know if people have had similar issues if they currently hold a Citi card.

Just to update, I originally had a Virgin Money card. Cancelled it, then about a month later successfully applied for a Citi Rewards card. No issue getting the 100k Velocity Points on offer through the Citi card at the time.

Similar situation in the other direction. Wife had a Qantas Premier, cancelled it, then a few months later applied for a Virgin Money and got the bonus points.

Suspect if you did it often or reapplied for the same brand in a short window, you may not find the same success.

Thanks for the tip. Good to know.
