Hi All

Booked MEL-SYD on JQ using a credit voucher and then paid for a QF flight home.

All good so far, trouble is JQ have cancelled JQ502 for the past 8 days including this morning (I hoped they were alternating weekly cancellations with JQ504 but it appears not).

To ensure I can get to Sydney I have booked another flight on QF (Bus reward) to ensure I make it.

Of course JQ say my fare is non refundable unless they actually cancel it.

Thoughts?

Thanks Peter

How fixed are you on flying JQ502 at 7:20am.

Today they had three flights all within about 2 hours of that initial flight : JQ500 6:05am, JQ504 8:15am and JQ506 9:25am.

On the 4th there are also three flights within about 2 hours of that initial departure so there is a good chance Jetstar will get you to where you want to be but maybe not at the exact time you want.

Jetstar considers anything within 3 hours of the originally scheduled time to be acceptable, so if they do cancel JQ502 and are able to get you on one of the three services on either side of your original flight then you're not entitled to a free cancelation unless you argue that "you are unable to use the booking for its intended purpose and we are unable to book you on an alternative flight that is acceptable to you".

Thanks for the reply Henrus.

If I could be 100% assured of flying on 500 or 504 that would be fine, but there is no guarantee whilst I know QF will definitely get me there.

What they should offer now is the chance to move to one of the ones they believe in a high likelihood is going to fly.

Yes I know low cost carrier etc, and yes if they fill the plane between now and Thursday they wont cancel it etc.

I just don't understand how they can sell a ticket for a flight they know has a high probability of being cancelled because it has been 8 days in a row..... end of rant :)

Given the number of morning JQ services, Jetstar will get you there but it may not be at the exact time you want. Chances are if they cancel the flight by the time they notify you they would have already rebooked you on a flight leaving before or after the one you wanted.

All airlines in Australia have buried somewhere in their conditions of carriage that arrival/departure times aren't a part of the contract they have with you:

Qantas (9.1a) - Conditions of Carriage | Qantas AU
Jetstar (also 9.1a) - https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/conditions-of-carriage-jq
Virgin Australia (12) - Conditions of Carriage | Virgin Australia
Rex (11) - https://www.rex.com.au/FlightInfo/COC.aspx

Qantas was until recently selling international flights for mid-year and NZ flights from 29 March. Likewise, there have been many routes/flights that ended up being canceled due to border closures or other complications but in the end, they all do it Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin, and now even Rex (they canceled about 60% of their jet services before the first passenger service even took off)!

Well in the end Jetstar did operate JQ502 and it even landed 12 minutes early.
