Roomba, Dysons, Thermomix and other household appliances

My parents' Frigidaire fridge is still going at 50 years old- I kid you not. The only issue is the freezer door's been missing for years. My BIL has had it for 30+ years as a drinks fridge at his holiday house. He's an accountant and way too stingy to chuck it while it's still chugging away. For the cost of the electricity it's used he could have replaced it several times over! If Frigidaire was still in production I'm sure they'd have given him a new one just because it's a fine example of how good their machines were. Like the donk on an old Holden perhaps
Doesn't surprise me at all - white goods used to be made to last. Where as these days, most white goods can be counted on to die as soon as the warranty period is up.

True, however manufacturers today could surely make energy efficient products that will continue to operate past their standard warranty period.
Oh yes. Absolutely. I heard rumours years ago they could produce women's stockings that would never ladder but they knew they would be killing their own markets.

FYI:

Bought an Roomba I7+ yesterday. Was going to just buy the i7 through Amazon US (then the base here) since they are significantly cheaper (I7 US$599, vs AUD$1499 at various stores here) but in the end got a deal through Hardly Normal for the I7+ and could have it today rather than wait on international shipping delays.

Took one full house cleaning run and two 'navigation' runs to fully map the house. Now I can name the rooms and selectively tell it (iPad/iPhone/Alexa) to just do specific rooms. Also once map is completed, one can adjust the room dividers and set up 'no go areas' to avoid cables or difficult etc areas so one no longer needs to use virtual walls.

Returns to base to recharge if necessary then continues and empties the dust box into the bag in the base unit when i7 box is full.

Overall quote happy with it so far.

How loud is it when running?

Very acceptable, quieter than our Dyson hand held. Much quieter than the older Roomba I have in my office. It's quote noisy when it empties the bin into the base unit though, but that's to be expected.

Would you be able to comfortably have a phone conversation (work not personal) with it running the room you're in? Or what about one room away kind of thing?

Yes it would be ok in the same room. I'll measure the dBs next time I run it for you.

Any suggestions on best thing for tiles. I know have a lot inside and out and obviously outside get very dusty quickly and I'm not keen on mopping too often. Once I've finished my renovations I will get a regular cleaner but not sure I will include the balconies.

What do people think of the electric tile cleaners? Does a roomba just do dust?

There are robot mops. iRobot have one but there are others. Reviews sound good. I thought of getting one for our wooden floors but using something like that on almost 100 year old polished floors doesn't really sound safe!

We have a cleaner but also have a steam mop for when needed. We ended up getting a cheapie as we just wanted to do basic cleaning and infrequently. We have a Vax and it does work fine, especially if the floors are not particularly dirty and you just want a quick mop to get rid of surface dirt. Seems to fail quite regularly - we seem to replace every few years.

I seem to have Kondo'ed my airfryer 😫. Went looking for it and it's gone. So any tips for another one? I'm thinking of one where I can get the baking accessory in an attempt to try replicate a browning function. Don't need a huge one, maybe four people max. Phillips seem good?

We have TWO Phillips air-fryers ! I didnt think I needed an air-fryer - but after watching the Phillips lady demo it several times on TVSN I bought one from Harvey Normal - and loved it, so much so that I bough the super XXL large version when it came out ! SO both Phillips and very happy with them.
