Jetstar ditches fuel surcharges

JETSTAR is removing all international fuel surcharges in response to lower oil and jet fuel prices.

The move follows the removal of all domestic fuel surcharges by Jetstar and Qantas from January 1.

Jetstar said from midnight tonight, it would remove the $25 fuel surcharge on trans-Tasman services, the $35 surcharge on its short haul Asian services and the $68 surcharge on its international long haul services.

Hopfully we are one step closer to the complete abolition of fuel fines.

At the moment JetStar's price is all over the place, may be because of the new booking system, SIN=>DRW at a specific date was 261 before
the end of the old system, 201 after the new system, two days later 231
today 160 !! and I think they still have not put the tax in !

I am talking about all inclusive price here...

I really don't see a problem with the total fare remaining the same after the abolition of the fuel surcharge. Rolling the current fuel fine into the base fare is the correct thing to do in my opinion. So remove a $68 fuel fine and add $68 to the base fare and they win my congratulations for doing the right thing.

BUT then they haven't actually removd the fuel fine charge, they have just hidden it.

Can someone tell me what the passenger movement charge of $47 is?

If you do a booking on the JQ web site (since the IT change over last weekend) it breaks down all of the "taxes".

Absorbed it into the base fare where it should be. I have no problem with that.

That would be the Australian Departure Tax, also called Passenger Movement Charge and should be shown in the tax breakdown as code AU.

I prefer if all charges are rolled into an advertised fare. At the end of the day, if you want to compare a ticket price between several carriers then it doesn't really matter if one charges a fuel tax of $200 and another charges $100 while another charges $50. If you fly based on the total cost of the ticket rather than brand loyalty then you choose the cheaper fare (unless of course other factors such as service levels, timetables etc come into play)

But it can make a big different for things like FF awards where the fuel fines are added after the points are used to "purchase" the flight. However, as many (all??) QF FF redemptions on JQ flights are booked under a QF flight code, I guess the FF redeemers will still e paying the surcharges :evil:. It also makes a difference for any travel agents earning commission from the sale of the fare (probably not hugely important for JQ fares).

Now we may have the situation where someone on a QF codeshare on a JQ operated flight may be paying a fuel fine while a JQ ticketed passenger is not.
