Book a flight and Extend Current status to 2022

We’ve used our leave up already with flights south and west next year. Another long weekend somewhere then...

WP here who is at 1900SC with an Oct 31, 2021 end date. No extension mentioned in the email due the requal already going through. Only SC rollover.

Dear THS,
While travel restrictions have meant less flying for our loyal members, your ongoing support has never meant more.

That’s why we’d like to help you maintain the travel benefits you’ve earned.

Throughout the year we’ve offered members a range of support mechanisms to retain their tier including status extensions, Status Credit boosts and the ability to earn them on the ground.

Now, as travel resumes we want to make sure you continue to enjoy these benefits.

To give you a headstart on reaching your status goal beyond 2022 we will rollover up to 500 eligible Status Credits into your next membership year. All you need to do is book a Qantas operated flight (with a QF flight number) before your membership year ends, for travel before the end of 2021.*

Correct. All SC earned from flying on QF, JQ or partners can be rolled over.

No. Must be booked on or after 23 November 2020, and JQ domestic in Australia does not count for status extension or rollover. JQ domestic in New Zealand does count (makes sense since no way to earn QF status credits in NZ).

You are confusing the eligibility requirement...

What flights are eligible to qualify me for the Status Credit rollover?
To be eligible for the Status Credit rollover, you need to book, pay and have the ticket issued on at least one of the following:
  • Any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number, or
  • Any Qantas Points earning Jetstar international booking with a JQ flight number including Jetstar flights within New Zealand (JQ), Jetstar Japan (GK) and Jetstar Asia (3K) flights. Jetstar domestic flights within Australia are ineligible.
The booking creation date must be on or after 23 November 2020 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 March and 31 December 2021. The flight must be booked to travel before 31 December 2021.

with which status credits will be rolled over...

Which Status Credits count towards the rollover?
Status credits earned through flying or with our partners on the ground will count towards the rollover. Status Credits provided by Qantas as a bonus, support or gift will not count towards the rollover.

We were discussing the later. A JQ domestic flight will not trigger the rollover, but if the rollover is triggered by flying on QF (for example), the JQ domestic SCs will roll over. Hopefully that makes sense.

Yeah that's the mistake I made - I just saw the list of conditions under the SC rollover section - I actually missed that requirement that you have to book a flight (even though I don't need it for the status extension). I've got 280 in the bank ready to go so can earn another 200 before EO March to get the maximum rolled over (480) - meaning I need 720 next year to retain WP. Doable. Hopefully trans tasman is open by then.

Wow, these are strange times.

Made a revenue booking today, hot on the heels fo border opening, blissfully ignorant of this largesse. Had a plan to requal by April the hard way. Then received the QFF email this arvo and thought I'd booked too early again (limitless experience of bookings followed by DSC offers). Amazing to discover that the email offer is retrospective to yesterday .

Even more amazing to discover that the money trashed on hotel bookings, BP petrol, etc for SCs will roll over to 2021-22. My SC cup runneth over.

And the other strange thing is that, given this absurdly easy way to retain status, after 125 posts there have been no complaints yet of "my SCs were earned by hard flying" and overcrowding in the (reduced number of) lounges due to status impostors.

Strange times indeed. But we did crack a bottle of bubbly tonight in honour of them.

BTW not surprised the offer includes reward bookings. The beancounters are no doubt wailing about the size of the liability in large point balances out there in punterland.

Cheers skip

Seems a blanket extension for non AU/NZ based flyers with the squiggle requirement removed.

Unfortunately as I'm based overseas I won't be able to benefit, but I'm really pleased for all the QFF status holders in Aus and NZ who are eligible as this is a relatively easy way to extend status.
Just read from Executive Traveller that overseas residents are going to get an extra 12 months free without having to fly, so you guys have it easier than us!
I am very grateful to be getting the free extension, but do think it is a little unfair on those based in Aus and NZ. Perhaps to be fair they should have offered an extension for a fee to those outside roughly equivalent to the cost of booking a cheap flight e.g. $50 plus 8000 Qantas Points or $150.
Perhaps the even up for you is that if they do not book a flight there will be no rollover SC's for their next membership year?

I understand you want it to be fair in the respect of if AU/NZ have to book at least one flight then the others should "pay up" too but really.. this just recognises the reality that someone in the UK or US or wherever is almost certain to not be able to fly on a QF service from wherever they are. That's just the reality of how it will be almost certainly till the 2nd half of 2021.

Given all we have to do is book one single flight to earn this I have zero issue at all.
You seem to be under the misapprehension that I am in some way complaining about getting a free status extension. Far from it, I have said I am very grateful for getting the free extension, and as I am based in the UK there is no requirement for me to take any flights. I was making the point that I would have been willing to pay a small a fee in cash or points as obviously I could not have met a requirement to fly even a single QF flight, however, I'm happy I don't have to.

I will also benefit from the generous SC rollover, however, whether this is of any use to me will of course depend on being able to get 4 QF flights in my next membership year.

Of course being overseas, what I will not have access to are many of the on the ground SC offers that there have been e.g. various credit cards, Qantas hotels, Woolworths, health insurance etc, and indeed there is no reason why I should have access to these as Qantas will be naturally Aus/NZ focused.

Thanks, I can see there is more than one way of interpreting it. Seems odd to rollover SC earned different airlines (and for different dates?) than the eligibility criteria. I hope your interpretation is correct since my current membership year includes a lot of SCs from flown, and booked but unflown, JQ domestic flights which will be a handy head start for 2022 (if rolled over).

I agree with the interpretation that SCs from all flights during the entire membership year will be eligible towards the rollover (subject to the maximum limits), provided you have booked one QF flight on or after 23 November.

I am still happy that I had my status extended until the end of February 2022 and therefore been free from angst all year.

I didn’t see this announcement in my in-box, so once again have to thank AFFers. I see we January and February folk will just receive the 50% status boost; I didn’t realise we would. (Not that it applies, but of course I booked four flights only a week ago! It would have been so... annoying.)

I’m sure there will be many who will book flights for their “status runs”.

It makes sense - Qantas wants incentivise a future booking on its own metal (where possible), but it's not going to penalise anyone who has already been earning JQ SCs this year.

Couple of questions
* I have a Dec 31 anniversary and re-qualified last year, so under the previous extension arrangements, I am already extended through all of 2021 (but must re-qualify next year); this is still in place, yes ?
* Do I need to book a new flight after this announcement for the SC rollover to take effect, or is that only for the status extension ? I have 180 SC from Jan/Feb this year , and will get 20 more next month for a domestic trip, so I'd like to "save" these if I can.
(Annoyingly, I do have a return flight coming up that I booked on 22 Nov, just before this announcement. )

If you book a new flight you'll get status credit rollover, but no extensions as you've already requalified.

Under the previous status support you couldn't have been extended through to Dec 2022, but you've now been extended to Dec 2022 under yesterday's announcement.

Due to your Dec anniversary, you won't be able to rollover the 180 SC earned this year BUT you are in an even better situation (Dec anniversaries have benefited most out of yesterday's announcement)

On 1 January your status credits will reset. It's expected that you'll then receive the previously announced Status Boost payment from Qantas (600 SC for WP, 300 SC for Gold) to start your 2021 year - even though you won't need them to retain status. If you meet the one QF flight requirement in 2021, SC earned from flying or ground partners up to the cap (but not including the Status Boost) can then be rolled over into 2022.

Confused? Yes. You're not alone.

Sorry, I confused the matter even further with a typo in my question (edited now) - I meant that with the previous arrangements, my status was extended until end 2021. I was querying whether I could double-up or whether this new announcement replaces the previous one. It seems like you're confirming I actually get two full years of extension.

Yes, very confusing. Also I somehow thought the one flight would have to be booked in 2020, since my status ends 31 Dec 2020? I can swing that if needed - but if I only have to book or fly in 2021, that's exceedingly generous ...

@jpp42 this table is probably the clearest part of the whole FAQ

1606258892774.png

Your Dec 2020 status will be automatically extended to Dec 2021 per the previous support arrangements.

You need to book and travel on one flight by 31 Dec 2021 in order to receive another extension through to Dec 2022.

if I only have to book or fly in 2021, that's exceedingly generous ...

and this is exactly why Dec anniversaries benefited most from yesterday's announcement!

Thanks for posting that, I should have checked that FAQ more carefully before posting. What I wasn't entirely sure about is that my extension from 31 Dec 2020 to 31 Dec 2021 was already set in stone - meaning that for purposes of this new announcement, my status expiry date is already considered to be 31 Dec 2021, despite the fact that we haven't even started 2021 yet. The fact that the above table doesn't show 31 Dec 2020 at all, and also that my QFF "card" in the app shows 2021, confirms this.

At this stage, the only use of the 600 SC boost would be if I were to earn P1 in 2021, yes? It would give me a 600-SC head start on that? Not really fussed, as you've said I've really lucked out based on where my membership year falls so I won't complain!

All good, it's a complicated set of rules compounded by the nuanced differences between Jan-Feb, Mar-Oct, and Nov-Dec anniversaries.

At this stage, the only use of the 600 SC boost would be if I were to earn P1 in 2021, yes? It would give me a 600-SC head start on that?

Correct, and they also count to your lifetime tally.
