Tangara School for Girls, at Cherrybrook in Sydney's north-west, is emerging as a new coronavirus hotspot.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she expected the Tangara cluster would grow as numerous household contacts were susceptible to the virus.

Testing numbers also continue to decline across the state with just 13,000 tests completed, prompting a re-think from NSW Health on testing locations and strategy.

I think we are at the point - about 1 month after Crossroads was reported - that any further cases of community transmission is a bad day, and under investigation is not much better.

NSW Health has released a breakdown of the 22 new COVID-19 cases recorded across the state.

Of the new cases:

– 16 were locally acquired and linked to known cases, including 8 from Tangara cluster

– four are returned travellers from overseas

– one was acquired in Melbourne

– one was locally acquired, and is under investigation

Curious as to where you read this? Unlike Victoria where police checks (which started much later than other states) have have continued to indicate very poor compliance in some areas, I have read nothing of the sort wrt NSW.

You state started much later than other states. When did all the other states start?

March 26: Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton AM said about 380 police officers were knocking on doors around the state on Thursday.

Just prior to this it would seems that each state and territory were deciding how to enforce things.

The first wave in Vic essentially was handled ok. The problems really are with the second wave started by the hotel quarantine failure (quite possibly by intimate contact) and then in particular it getting into segments of the population who for various reasons were not as willing to follow the rules/restrictions, and then growing from that community spread.

I have read nothing of the sort wrt NSW.

My understanding is all those in self isolation are door-knocked at least once during the 14 day window - its not perfect but nothing to suggest that Queenslanders are more compliant with directive to stay home that those in NSW.

And we have a definite problem with QLD residents returning to the State lying about where they have been.

Though longterm planning is certainly prudent. But I doubt anyone will know what is happening in 2 months let alone 18 months.

NT does have aboriginal communities that are believed to be particularly vulnerable to Covid 19 and so one can fully understand their cautious approach.

So Gladys will not allow the people caught at the border who are residents of the ACT to return home with a police escort.
She doesn’t trust us to be able to pull that off. I suppose an eight hour trip with no stopping could be a problem for some.
There are people in their cars with pets etc at the border being expected to drive back to Melbourne even though they weren’t actually in Melbourne to start with but in the regions, to get on an aeroplane to fly to Canberra. What a debacle.

Well without anymore restrictions or interventions from the NSW government they are going to continue to have community transmission building (against the stated national goal.... ) but NSW seem ok with that, so I think we may have to get used to it!

When in Victoria in self isolation in our holiday house, late March/early April, we had no compliance check at all.

By way of contrast, in a benevolent dictatorship, we are now in Day 2 of hotel quarantine in Singapore and we had three sms messages yesterday requiring us to report our location by clicking on a link (and it takes location data from your phone).

Reporting a very patchy application of social distancing and mask wearing in Jindabyne at the moment. I feel like it's a bit of a powder keg here. All it takes is one asymptomatic person without a mask or standing too close, or one person who has mild symptoms but was not prepared to lose their non-refundable deposit if they cancelled their holiday...I wish there was more obvious behavioural economics input towards understanding the perverse incentives that act on people's decision making.

Think you are going off track a little here.

My recent comments were about those NSW residents isolating at home since the second wave from Vic came to NSW (crossroads hotel onwards), not the hotel quarantine program or the failures before the hotel quarantine program for international arrivals came into being, nor those who had a pass to drive through/transit stopping outside of their permit.

Most of the articles you posted were from March, and the precise reason hotel isolation for international arrivals was introduced nationally. I think everyone can concede the international arrivals hotel quarantine program was sorely needed.

The case of the druggie Victorian resident who had been granted a transit permit in July to travel directly to Queensland via NSW, who did not, says nothing re NSW residents likelihood to comply with self isolation orders, These breaches from Victorians permitted to transit the state is one reason Gladys is now not allowing ACT residents to transit to return to ACT - everyone flies via SYD if coming from Vic except freight or border residents.

I had understood Vic weren't checking up on those positive local cases who were meant to be quarantining at home until media leaked that they had been going to work. Your link would say there were some checks which is good, but the fact that it was reported that significant numbers weren't at home when they should be was a clear point of community transmission. Also seemed to be ramped up significantly by ADF personnel once Vic lost control of the outbreak. I will never understand why people breach staying at home orders, weren't charged and put into policed quarantine Andrews et al were too lenient for too long.

NSW has had some hotel issues, never denied that, but have seen nothing like 20% of those meant to be isolating not being at home when checked. I can only recall 3 hotel escapes (the one you quoted above, plus the woman who set the fire alarms off and the one who conned her way out to the airport), which given NSW has taken over 60% of international arrivals since the program begun is quite small. Imperfect yes.

In interview last week Dr Chant said compliance checks had found people were isolating as expected - I cant find any articles since Crossroads outbreak of NSW residents not isolating when they should, which I take some comfort in.

Actually, it’s worse than I thought. New South Wales government is insisting they drive back to Melbourne ditch their car and pets or whatever, fly to Sydney do 14 days quarantine at their own cost before flying on to Canberra. I actually had already got approval to go across but it was rescinded very quickly.

There have been quite a few venue fines in the snowy region for lack of social distancing (masks are not required), can only hope they get sprung if flouting the rules. If concerned report the venues.
