Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

The person may also have chosen to be cared for at their facility, and to not be moved not just due the "sales pitch" but as they wish to remain where they have been living.

With the numbers for those on ventilation, note that as I understand it this includes both those who have been intubated (highly isolating) as well as those on CPAP type respirators (ie Face mask and so less isolating and patients can still talk).
Yes, SOME may have but most of their families (seen on the media) wanted them out of the homes & have been asking for that result for nearly two weeks.

Yet the Dept of Health shows a flat line basicly for ICU total & the ventilation subset. The Bill Shorten neighbour's case - lost for 5 days in the system suggests choice is not being made by the families.

If you are following the Qld cases, I think they found out they were positive last night and the third one today.

When they had symptoms and decided (together?) to test (and perhaps not isolate while waiting for result) is perhaps up for conjecture.
Hope thats right. I did see on that list two quick trips to the Dr in the middle of the day. So if the first visit was the test they covered some places before possibly getting the result.

So they tested positive and continued on with life as normal?
To weigh in on earlier discussion, I know they are young, but they really should have to face serious consequences for their thoughtless actions which will now have major impact on so many people. We need to stop excusing ‘youthful stupidity’.

Qld process in words

About the testing process
Testing for COVID-19 involves collecting nasal (inside your nose) or throat swabs, and/or sputum (mucus coughed up). These samples are then transferred to the nearest laboratory that is set up to test for COVID-19.

If you are tested for COVID-19 but aren't really sick, you may be sent home to self-isolate while you wait for the test results. This may take several days.

If you are really sick you may be admitted to hospital for treatment. If you become sicker while you are waiting for results, please contact your doctor or call an ambulance. Make sure you let them know you are waiting for test results for COVID-19.

If the result is positive, you will receive a call from a public health doctor or nurse who will tell you what to do next. If you are well enough to take care of yourself, you will need to stay at home in self-isolation until you recover. If you get sicker, you may be admitted to hospital in an isolation area.

If the result is negative, your doctor or the clinic that tested you may let you know. Depending on where you got tested, you may just receive an automated SMS. If you have been issued with a notice telling you to self-quarantine, you must stay in self-quarantine until the end date written on the notice, even if you get a negative result. This is because you may still develop COVID-19 infection.

If you are waiting on a test result, the people you live with and other close contacts do not need to be in quarantine unless the local public health unit tells them to. They should stay away from the sick person as much as possible. If the test result is positive, they may be assessed as a close contact and will then need to be in quarantine.

Edit: unfortunately, nothing mandatory in isolating after a test.

INFECTED QLD WOMAN DELAYED COVID TEST DESPITE DOCTOR’S WARNING

A school cleaner who tested positive for coronavirus allegedly went to her job at a private school south of Brisbane for three days before ringing in sick and then delayed getting tested despite being told by a doctor to immediately do so. The woman fell sick after returning on a flight from Sydney.

Well, well well...Eve Black was just arrested.

'She was asked to provide her name and address which she refused to do. Police then directed her to produce her driver's licence and explain her reason for travel, which she also refused to comply with,' Victoria Police said.

'This led to police arresting her. During the arrest, police were forced to break the woman's car window as she refused to speak to them, wind down her window, or step out of the vehicle.'

If that’s accurate, then the infectious period is probably 22/7-25/7.

Edit: Maybe there is a need for laws that Doctors can dob in a patient under this pandemic.

Now that’s one for whom I have zero sympathy :)

Excellent: (Edit LTOz beat me to it :) )

The Melbourne conspiracy theorist who went viral after filming herself berating a police officer at a lockdown checkpoint has been arrested over the incident.

In dramatic scenes on Wednesday, Eve Black’s windscreen was broken after she refused to cooperate with Victoria Police officers before being arrested at 1.55pm on Princes St in Carlton.

Ms Black filmed herself refusing to cooperate with a Victoria Police officer on July 23, saying in the video she wanted to “stand up for not only (her) own rights but the rights (of her) brothers and sisters here on earth”.

...
Ms Black has been released pending summons for traffic-related offences, failing to produce a licence, failing to produce name and address, and breaches of the Chief Health Officer’s directives.

Thanks lto for posting and RooFlyer for the summary. We should all promise not to click on the linked articles. These self serving publicity seekers do not deserve such oxygen.

Has anyone else noticed how virtually ALL of the Aged Care deaths appear to have been in place NOT in a hospital?

Out of interest, where are you seeing the stats/reports on what proportion of residents who have died in the aged care home vs the hospital?

With St Basils:
Relatives told Neos Kosmos that they were told that their parents were at the facility while they were fighting for their lives in hospitals.

I can't understand how a Doctor can recommend a patient be tested and yet that info doesn't flow to the Health Dept where it can be followed up in a timely manner if the test hasn't taken place. This isn't the only case nor the only jurisdiction where something like this has occurred.

its probably a rhetorical statement, but it clearly appears that patient privacy has trumped on this occasion. Hence why I raised the possibility of another law change.

unfortunately, nothing mandatory in isolating after a test

However given the pair has been in Vic within 14 days of entering Qld, they were required to be in hotel quarantine at their own expense for 14 days. The time between their MEL flight landing in SYD and their BNE flight departing was 45 mins, so they transited SYD Airport they didn't visit Sydney. Clear they were trying to avoid the cost of a oaid hotel stay by not mentioning Vic on their border declaration.

If they'd been in hotel quarantine where they were supposed to be they would have been tested whilst there.

Agree. But this report was very satisfying.

I also note that Neos Kosmos has now identified her as Greek-Australian. Greek-Australians are currently the largest cohort of recent CV19 deaths in Victoria. I am sure that everyone knows that Greek-Australians are a very large group in Melbourne. I suspect that she will cop a lot more flak.

Yes, that’s right.

I was pointing out that since they had already dodged quarantine by lying on their border declaration, they were under the general population rules.

A query came up as to whether they are required to isolate (under the general population rules) while waiting for a test result....the Qld material quoted suggests the answer is ........maybe.

And in which case she should have cared for her grandparents etc and family.

They need a mandatory reporting system where Drs have strongly recommended. Which wouldnt be everyone but just those who reported more than the normal sniffle etc. Like a fever. .

I'm not referring to another matter. I'm referring to the current outbreaks at non-government nursing homes in Victoria where some don't appear from media reports (which may be flawed} that many homes had no PPE, some homes were not or insufficiently prepared at all for an outbreak, some homes where PPE was supplied conducted little or no or insufficient training, some homes where vision is in the media of used PPE lying around on tables and chairs and floors and there is obviously insufficient supervision or monitoring, homes where symptomatic staff who were ill were allowed to come to work and work across multiple sites, or more. These things are all the responsibility & accountability of the administrators of the homes.

Sure the legislation, medical health restrictions and orders are issued by the various governments, but these lapses all point back to those who are there day to day owning and running the homes.

Our taxes don't cover having a government "police" officer of various flavours at every premises in the state every day to see if the directions are being followed.
Again especially in a pandemic it is the State government who is in charge no matter who owns or funds the facility.
Why could the Tasmanian government shut down the Nursing Homes in North west Tasmania when they recognised there was a problem in the north west.
Why has the Queensland government shut down nursing homes in Southern brisbane within 24 hours of 2 people testing positive having travelled to Victoria.

In Tasmania several people on the States emergency management Committee visited the North west. They not only made sure that health care workers in the public system were brought up to speed on PPE but also nursing home staff. It's fine to have a protocol but someone must take responsibility for monitoring that. And that in a Pandemic Emergency is the State Government. It worked in Tasmania where only 1 nursing home resident caught covid.

Now I see today that there is a big deal being made that 99.6 % of the deaths from Nursing Homes are in privately run facilities and that is shocking.Except that in Melbourne 99% of Nursing homes are privately run.
Most publicly run nursing homes as in every state are in rural or regional areas.

Now it has been known for a long time that conditions in many nursing homes aren't good. The Victorian Government not long ago held an Inquiry. So there should have been an awareness amongst Health bureaucrats that special care need being taken especially as by the time Australia was hit we knew it was the elderly predominantly at risk.

I dont know of any government run Nursing Homes in SA. But while the deaths will continue, hopefully in two weeks we will see true progress.
