Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Quite stunning. $125 from winery. Vue du monde charged some $300+ one NYE. Sheesh. Then tried to overcharge by another $70. Last time. Never going again.

This is brilliant, half way through its life. Good fruit, nice spicy tannins.

Succulence in front of some succulents...
Esteemed member Rug very kindly freighted over some fortifieds to ward off the Tassie chill and succeeded admirably! The Kalleske JMK is probably one of the most reliable fortified Shiraz's I've had over the last few years, it still has a brilliance and lightness of touch in the fruit that characterises much of their output, not at all syrupy, it is far too easy to drink (btw that's staining you can see on the bottle and not the colour of the contents :) ).
The Seppelt Barossa Valley Fortified Shiraz is something very special and I'm slightly awestruck to be gifted something of this age and quality. In 1982 I was but a callow youth in my gap year at art school; this is like drinking history, made liquid. Profound depth and length, you can almost chew the muscatel raisin-like flavours of this venerable drop, I'm eking it out by the thimble-full as I don't want the magic carpet ride to end, a very big thanks to Rug for his generous gift(s).

chardonnay: both great, Drumborg better than expected, Calyx (GW94) delicious even if only 10.6% (more available for $33 soon at Small Patch where winemaker Yuri also works)

Eastern Peake Intrinsic pinot noir needs more time, best on third/final day

liked After Five grenache more than Aphelion Confluence, but not Bondar Rayner or Paralian

$149.95 @ Carboot (less with $50 voucher)

From last night,

Mount Langi shiraz ,black fruit ,spicy ,pepper, still evolving ,smooth,a good length, will open another bottle in 5 years, probably open a St. Peter to compare next time.

Voyager Estate Shiraz, bought these 2 from dan Murphy on release ,it’s either this or the cape Mentelle(bought both).
07 still quite bold and tight through out the night , mix berries ,herb spices ,still holding up on the young side, very good tannins and acidity, very balance.

08 is more mature than 07, light red fruit, pepper and spices all around ,this is good to go, screwcap might kept it for
another 10 years , but why wait?!

Thanks for the notes. Was looking at my Mount Langi 05 the other day wondering if it’s time to drink it, I’ll wait :)

If you have more bottles, you can always drink one, just decant it before hand, I don’t decant much as we usually sit and drink for a few hours sometimes all day long. And of course good weather like today always helps.

Only one bottle left from that year. Back then all my purchases were from cellar door and even $60 which I believe was the RRP seemed a bit too dear.

I’ve recently opened the 00 and it was just perfect.

I think 05 was even better vintage in the Grampians so makes sense to keep it for at least 5-8 more years.

This is the only vintage I have left for mount langi, I turned to cliff edge shiraz from 06 onwards, better value and still is.

I stopped buying in 2012, that’s when Mount Langi price suddenly doubled IIRC. Agree about Cliff Edge.

2012 was the one gone over $100, there’s a $10-$15 increase since the 07. Which makes the cliff edge more attractive, I think it was less than $20 a bottle until the 2012 but at $22 a bottle for nearly the same quality wine which is a great buy.

I enjoy the Cliff Edge Shiraz. Is there are regular source for good prices on it? Does the Rathbone Group have a cellardoor.co/cellarone equivalent albeit on a much smaller scale? Dan's has a member special @ $25
