Equipment advice

Hi all,

vaguely planning a RTW (likely in Y sadly) for late 2009.

Looking for advice mostly on aircraft choice.
Priority order is Legroom (both of us OW ruby so no exits avail!), Comfort (new seats essentially); IFE.


Potential routes and options:

LHR-DXB on BA: 777 or 747?

DXB-HKG on CX - 330 or 747?

HKG-SIN on CX - 330, 777 or 747

MAD-LHR on BA - 321, 320, 319 or doesnt matter? Leaning towards 319 (smaller so shorter board / deplane!)


What routes does LAN fly Sth America-Europe?


We'e basically avoiding AA and IB - AA from experience, IB by reputation.

LHR-DXB on BA: 777 or 747? Can't say I ever noticed much difference, though my personal preference is 747

You may already have it, but the OneWorld web site has a downloadable timetable which sits on the desktop. It updates itself by request with timetable revisions when you are online.

Again you may be familiar with it, but don't forget there's also the interactive map on that web site which is a useful tool for checking available routes.

For example, the timetable shows you can go to Europe from South America by passing through Sao Paulo (GRU) and picking up the BA 747 service (or one stop from Buenos Aires again BA 747). Thus fly Santiago to GRU on LAn and thence by BA to LHR. (You may want to avoid LHR!).

TG - that's helpful. Presumably the 777s and 747 interiors at least as basically the same / same age.

Platy - thanks, have been playing with the oneworld site, but at times its a bit user unfriendly (slow internet connection; I'd built a while itinery of 16 stops, then went to "price" but popup blocker stopped, and when i rest popup blocker, it reset back to start again. Arrgghh. Also, there's no substitute for experience!


LAN to MAD sounds somewhat enticing as it saves a trasit of LHR and also saves 2 EU segments to use. I might have a look at that one!

The conections EZE - GRU are somewhat hopeless so was avoiding.

DXB-HKG on CX - 330 or 747?

Avoid the CX 777 as they are all regional config. CX A330 can be either regional or long-haul. Look at the seatmap and if an F cabin or new J herringbone config then its long-haul. Avoid the regional A330 if possible. CX 744 is generally a good option.

I was just suggesting the F and J cabin is a good way to identify of long-haul or short-haul aircraft.

Y seats are similar on both, but CX long-haul aircraft will have AVOD IFE while regional do not.

I much prefer CX B777's in whY than CX A333's in whY as some A333's have the AVOD controller in the side of the seat limiting width. I have not come across one of these recently so not sure how many they have like that.

Cheers, I was interested in knowing as Jenny and I have 4 CX trips in April; 3 on 777 and one on 330.

Y seats are similar on both, but CX long-haul aircraft will have AVOD IFE while regional do not.

That's the sort of info I'm after.

I do note that 330 have Window/aisle pairs (2x4x2) while 777 have 3x3x3.
