I forgot to mention the surprise, what a lot of planning but what a lot of pleasure everyone got out of it. It is so exciting ...I wonder if you would ever be able to do it again..or will the family expect you home every christmas now ;)

This is a fabulous trip report, thank you for sharing....especially since we cannot travel for a while.....I was also booked on Air China business class to Taiwan but had to cancel - it is good to be able to see what we missed - or didn't miss. We booked them as they were partners of Qantas and had a great fare.

Different airline! Air China aren't partners with Qantas.

I think you may be thinking of China Airlines, which is based in Taiwan ;)

It was definitely fun to do this once. I don't think I could possibly pull off a surprise of this magnitude again, though. And if I did, I don't think I would quite get the same priceless reactions a second time. It would be too... expected! 😲

Oops you are right---China Air not Air China...big difference :D

As I expected, I didn't receive many Christmas presents (since nobody was expecting me!) but I didn't care at all. I was just happy to be with my family, and I think they were happy to see me too.

We spent Christmas Day with the extended family (who also weren't expecting me) and I had a great few days in Brisbane. I'm glad I made the trip because I'm not sure when I'll be able to see my grandparents again.

Thank you for bringing us on this beautifully written sabbatical. I am certain that you gave your family more with your presence, than any presents money could buy. And the special memory of this trip will only fortify as the years (and family) pass. I envy you for your ingenuity. And I envy your family for having such a considerate guy in their life.

Thanks for your trip report, Mattg!!! It's greatly appreciated. If it weren't for the !@#$%^& virus, I'd be in Berlin right now and heading off to London in 12 days time. Instead, it's stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne. But still, it could be worse.

Yes great reading Mattg, welcome in a time of parched trip reports. I can't help wondering if the Paringa wine on the menu has been ceremoniously scrubbed out at present given contemporary bilateral issues?

Not to cast any unnecessary or further dispersions on the accuracy of any information distributed by Air China - I note the last time I visited Paringa Estate it was in fact located on the Mornington Peninsula?

Where are our South Australian wine detectives?

Ha - well spotted. I have no idea whether this is still on the menu, but Paringa Estate is indeed in Victoria. I guess technically that is in the "south of Australia"?
