Maybe telephone your bank every couple of weeks to ascertain if anything has hit your former credit card.

I can't speak re other financial institutions but usually the NAB call centre staff are good to excellent.

Thanks. It was a Qantas CC (Citibank). I suppose I will call them up in a couple of weeks if I don't hear anything. I'm guessing Qantas may not transfer the funds for at least a month going by what others have said here.
 
ok just got what looks like a credit note after the cancellation back in early Feb -

did anyone get a voucher and subsequently then a refund without asking for one

I voluntarily cancelled an operated flight, and accepted the credit - which the email arrived just after the call

6 weeks later... full refund landed
 
I received the same email today. I’m going to play chicken as well. I want the full refund. If my gamble falls I’ll be $600 down if QF doesn’t cancel and I have to, but we might not want to spend the whole voucher on a flight for me next year.
im toying with this too, on some 3k worth of status run flights for june 12th... ugh. i'd far prefer the money back at this point than anything else.
anyone have any ideas when the voucher april 30th deadline thing will be extended? if at all? how far before the drop dead date was it extended last time?
 
Thanks for providing the email as I sent off enquiries for a few bookings where I got voucher confirmation on cancellation but requested refunds via the button, and another which I called as they changed the schedule to have a long layover and was not acceptable and was advised I would get a full refund. This was between 25 March and 2 April. Note that for all of these bookings I am unable to access any vouchers as they al come back with an error.

This what I got back from Qantas about my refund enquiries:

I’ve looked at your booking and can see it is currently in a credit voucher.

The booking can only remain a credit voucher as it was originally a gift voucher (which is non-refundable).

You’ll be able to use the credit towards future bookings.


So I am not entitled to a refund because I used a gift voucher in part payment of the fare. I've checked their conditions of carriage, can someone help and point to where it says I have to have a voucher and no refund if I pay with a gift voucher?

I think you should call them again as the portion that is gift voucher can’t be refunded but the cash payment can and should be refunded less cc fees. They did this for me in another booking where I actually cancelled (not Qantas) but they waived the cancel fees due to my health situation. This was in Feb before they got overwhelmed.
 
We have rewards booking for 19 July BNE to Singapore then Singapore to London (all Qantas).
We rewards bookings to return in mid-August Paris to Hong Kong (Cathay) and then Hong Kong to SYD, SYD to BNE (Qantas).

Clearly this trip is not happening.

I should just cancel the first legs before the April 30 cut-off…right?

Clearly this trip is not happening.

If it's a single PNR I'm pretty sure it will all cancel at once. The points flights I booked for my partner were over July/August as well. All legs including domestic and international cancelled in the one button press.

With a reward international booking, my understanding is that you can cancel now with full refund of points and cash (less any credit card fees) Without a cancellation fee. You are not entitled to a credit voucher.

If you are inferring that the return leg is a separate booking, then I think there might be issues cancelling the Cathay leg. Thats what I gathered from other contributions to this thread because it seems to be reliant on Cathay letting you cancel without a cancellation fee (5000pts?).

Happy to be corrected by our more experienced members.

Even though you book through QF, the flights are on JQ metal and are subject to JQ cancellation fees. You can’t find out what these are unless you call QF and wait. Ours are 100% cancellation so if I had chosen Refund, I would’ve lost the entire $1400. Lucky I checked. By choosing voucher you can retain your $1400 BUT she was unable to confirm whether this voucher is a valid with both JQ or QF. It is that nice little crevice the customer falls through between the two.

If it's a flight that Qantas has cancelled (i.e. any time since this mess began and through at least end of May so far when Qantas has cancelled all international flights), then you're eligible for a full refund regardless of whether it's QF's or JQ's ordinary cancellation terms as it's the airline that's cancelled the flights.

Post end May, however, it's important to be carefully reading the fare rules of the ticket for any changes or potential cancellations initiated by you.
 
Just read the latest AFF newsletter relating to this topic. Qantas being tricky with no cancellations of June flights, and it looks unlikely until 30/4 when we can choose to cancel and get the voucher

I’ve got a red e deal domestic June return flights 3pp x $650 .....does anyone have a view whether they think it’s better to:
1) risk the whole amount by waiting to see if Qantas cancel the domestic flight and thus get full refund, or
2) get the voucher and save the change fee $99 ( I guess x 6, being 3 return flights)

If my flight was international, I would definitely wait given the travel ban in place. It’s tougher decision for domestic since it’s not a formal travel ban (ie 14 day quarantine for interstate travel in some states).

Im getting a voucher for my 1 x domestic flight, but its like 300 bucks and a dsc so good to have up my sleeve.

I think you will win in the end and get your full refund. Cash is king in this environment. I cancelled a SYD - PEN PE in June because i wanted the $ and of course they finally refunded me (less the $400 fee. Interesting after several calls they finally refunded it the day after Virgin entered into Voluntary Administration. In my opinion, highly unlikely Qantas will go into VA.

Agreed 100 percent- but QF call centre staff member (who didn’t use English as a first language and I could barely hear) would not refund my money. The only option is to pursue it under the provisions of Australian Consumer Law as the flights were cancelled by the carrier and I don’t have the energy to suffer through that and that is exactly what QF rely on even if you are a Gold FF.

By the by, for international flights to the US the DoT (US) has ordered that cancelled flights (at ALL fare levels/types) will be refunded. The rules are the same as for US domestic flight cancellations now. Qanta$ can be pursued this way for qualifying flights if necessary.

Specific details are on all of the US based FF sites (and probably here somewhere too) :)

As a data point, Qantas cancelled one of my domestic flights for early June. This was after the Government had announced that they would underwrite certain routes. Gladly took up the invitation to add another refund request to the backlog.

Have a few other flights through July that have not been cancelled. I will probably convert the lowest value fares to vouchers as they are easier to redeem and play chicken with Qantas on the higher value fares.

For me there is a good chance I can make use of the odd voucher by Dec 2021 (but not too many) so hedging my bets.

Quick question regarding the vouchers - when using these vouchers down the track, will you be able to book new fares of a different fare class than the original flight? For example:

- I currently have an Economy Sale (international) fare
- I cancel before 30 April and receive a voucher
- Will I be able to use the voucher on a different fare type other than Sale?
 
Also has anyone succeeded in getting a full refund (without incurring fees) for a flight which hasn't yet been cancelled by Qantas, either by contacting the email address posted earlier or by calling?

Yes you can, as long as the new fare amount is equal to or higher than the original fare amount (i.e. the new fare is more expensive than the old).
